UK Entry Requirements 2026: Mandatory Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

As of February 2026, the United Kingdom has fully implemented its digital border system. Under the new UK entry requirements, all visa-exempt travellers—including citizens from the EU, USA, Australia, and Canada—must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before arriving at the border.

The UK ETA is a mandatory digital permission linked to your passport. Whether you are travelling for tourism, business, or short-term study, you must secure your authorisation to avoid being denied boarding by your carrier.

An ETA allows multiple trips to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months, for a period of two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

What Is the UK ETA?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory digital travel permission required by all visitors from visa-exempt countries — including all EU citizens — before travelling to the United Kingdom. Introduced by the UK Home Office, the ETA is not a visa. It is linked electronically to your passport, costs £20 (government fee), and is valid for two years with unlimited trips of up to six months each. Every traveller needs their own ETA, including children. Without a valid ETA, carriers are legally required to refuse boarding. Apply at least three working days before travel.

Do You Need a UK ETA?

While the Electronic Travel Authorisation is mandatory for most visitors, certain travellers are exempt from this requirement.

You do not need a UK ETA if you hold:

  • A British or Irish passport: Citizens of the UK and Ireland do not require digital authorisation.
  • UK Residency Status: If you have valid permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme).
  • A Valid UK Visa: If your nationality or purpose of visit already requires a standard visa, you do not need an additional ETA.
If you fall into these categories, your entry to the UK remains unchanged. For all other visa-exempt travellers, our office is here to assist with your UK ETA application to ensure a smooth journey.

UK ETA Fees & Service Costs

To obtain your Electronic Travel Authorisation, there are two separate costs involved. Our platform provides a comprehensive review and submission service to ensure your UK ETA application is error-free and processed quickly.

  • Government Fee: £20.00 (approximately €23.00*). This is the mandatory fee charged by the UK Home Office for every applicant. The ETA fee was increased from £16 to £20 in April 2026.
  • Handling Service Fee (amount depending on your selection during the application process): This fee covers our expert application review, priority support, and real-time status updates. By using this service, you benefit from a simplified application form and a dedicated team that checks your information against the latest 2026 UK entry requirements before submission, reducing the risk of errors or delays.
