Who Does NOT Need a UK ETA

CategoryReason
🇬🇧 British citizensBritish nationals have the right of abode — no ETA, no visa required
🇮🇪 Irish citizensExempt under the Common Travel Area agreement
UK visa holdersA valid UK work, study, or family visa already authorises entry
UK settled status holdersPre-settled or settled status under EU Settlement Scheme — but note: a valid ETA is still required at the departure airport when re-entering the UK on a foreign passport. See our eligibility guide for this critical distinction.
British National Overseas (BNO) passport holdersCovered by BNO visa route
Nationalities that require a full UK visaETA is not applicable — they must apply for a standard visa instead
📌 Dual Citizens — Which Passport to Use

If you hold citizenship of both a UK-ETA-eligible country and the United Kingdom, you must travel on your British passport. Attempting to enter on a foreign passport with a UK ETA when you hold British citizenship is a breach of immigration rules. If you are unsure whether you may hold British citizenship through descent, check your eligibility before applying for an ETA. Many nationals from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Malta and Caribbean Commonwealth nations may qualify for British citizenship through ancestry — our full eligibility guide explains the framework.

Countries Recently Removed from the UK ETA List

The following countries were initially included in the UK ETA scheme but have since been removed. Citizens of these countries now require a standard UK visa. The Home Office does not publish the criteria for these removals — they appear to be based on immigration risk assessments and bilateral diplomatic considerations. We update this page immediately whenever any nationality change is announced.

🇯🇴 JordanSeptember 2024Standard UK visa required
🇨🇴 ColombiaSeptember 2024Standard UK visa required
🇹🇹 Trinidad and TobagoSeptember 2024Standard UK visa required
🇳🇷 NauruEarly 2025Standard UK visa required
🇳🇮 NicaraguaMarch 2026Standard UK visa required
🇱🇨 Saint LuciaMarch 2026Standard UK visa required
⚠️ If Your Country Was Recently Removed

If your country appeared on the ETA list in the past but has since been removed, you cannot travel to the UK on an ETA — even if you previously held a valid one. Any previously issued ETA is void from the removal date. You must apply for a standard UK visa through the Home Office before booking travel. Check current requirements before making any travel arrangements.

The UK Is Not Part of Schengen

The United Kingdom operates its own immigration system, entirely separate from the Schengen Area. This means that a Schengen visa — even a valid, multiple-entry one — gives you no right to enter the UK. Equally, EU and EEA citizens who travel freely within Schengen still need a UK ETA before boarding a flight, Eurostar or ferry to Britain.

The ETA is the UK’s equivalent of the ETIAS (the upcoming Schengen travel authorisation for non-EU nationals): a lightweight electronic pre-clearance linked to your passport, not a visa. If you are planning a trip that combines continental Europe and the UK, you must ensure you hold both the relevant Schengen authorisation for your European stays and a valid UK ETA for the British portion. These are processed independently — holding one does not automatically confer the other.

For travellers arriving by Eurostar from Paris or Brussels: the UK ETA is checked at the departure station in continental Europe (Paris Gare du Nord or Brussels-Midi), not at London St Pancras on arrival. Ensure your ETA is confirmed before you reach the Eurostar departure lounge. For travellers using ferry routes — Hook of Holland to Harwich, or DFDS Oslo to Newcastle — the ETA check occurs at the European port of departure. Full details on all transport modes and ETA verification are in our application and travel guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries need a UK ETA in 2026?

85 nationalities require a UK ETA in 2026, including all 27 EU member states, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and most of South America and the Gulf. British and Irish citizens are exempt. Use the search tool at the top of this page to check your specific nationality, or browse our nationality guides by region for detailed country-specific information.

Do South African citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. South Africa is on the UK ETA eligible countries list. South African passport holders must obtain a UK ETA before travelling to or transiting through the United Kingdom. The ETA costs £20 plus our handling fee, is valid for 2 years, and can be applied for online in approximately 10 minutes.

Do Albanian citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. Albanian citizens were added to the UK ETA scheme in April 2025 along with all other EU and EEA nationals. Albanian passport holders must apply for a UK ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom. Albania is an EU accession candidate but is not yet an EU member — Albanian citizens are treated as non-EU nationals for UK entry purposes.

Do Paraguayan citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. Paraguay is included in the UK ETA eligible countries list. Paraguayan passport holders must obtain a UK ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom. The requirement has been in force since January 2025. See our Latin America guide for specific guidance on Paraguay, including travel route information.

Do Egyptian citizens need a UK ETA?

No. Egypt is not currently on the UK ETA eligible countries list. Egyptian citizens require a standard UK visa to visit the United Kingdom. Check our eligibility guide for full details on the visa application process.

How many countries are on the UK ETA list?

As of May 2026, 85 nationalities are required to hold a UK ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom. The list has expanded gradually since the scheme launched in June 2023 with Qatar as the first country, and now includes all EU member states, most of the Americas, major Asia-Pacific countries, and the Gulf states. For the history and statistics behind the scheme’s growth, see our UK ETA Statistics 2026 page.

Is Jordan still on the UK ETA list?

No. Jordan was removed from the UK ETA eligible countries list in September 2024. Jordanian citizens now require a standard UK visa. Do not apply for an ETA — contact our team if you need guidance on the correct visa route.

Do I need a UK ETA if I am only transiting through a UK airport?

Yes, in most cases. If you are transiting through a UK airport — even airside, without passing through border control — and your nationality is on the ETA eligible list, you still require a valid UK ETA. Some nationalities require a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) instead. Check our eligibility guide or our dedicated Heathrow transit guide for your specific situation.

I have EU Settled Status in the UK. Do I still need an ETA when I return from abroad?

Yes — if you are travelling on a foreign (non-British, non-Irish) passport. EU Settled Status and Pre-Settled Status do not replace the ETA requirement at the departure airport. The ETA is verified by the airline when you board your return flight; your Settled Status is separately checked by UK Border Force on arrival. Both are required. This is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — aspects of the ETA for EU nationals resident in the UK. See our full eligibility guide for complete details.
