UK ETA 2026: Complete Guide for EU Citizens
Since 2 April 2025, all EU citizens must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom — whether by air, rail, or sea. As of 9 April 2026, the UK government fee increased to £20 (approx. €23) per person, as approved by UK Parliament in March 2026. The ETA is valid for two years and permits unlimited visits of up to six months each. Full enforcement has been in place since 25 February 2026 — without a valid ETA, carriers are legally required to refuse boarding.
Our assisted application prices remain unchanged — Regular, Priority, and Dedicated Agent options start from the same rates as before, as we have reduced our handling fee to absorb the government increase.

If you hold an EU passport, the rules for visiting the United Kingdom changed permanently on 2 April 2025. For the first time since the post-Brexit transition, every citizen of all 27 European Union member states is required to hold a UK ETA before boarding any flight, ferry, or Eurostar train to Britain.
This is not a visa. It is not a stamp, a sticker, or a form you fill in at the airport. The UK ETA is a digital travel permission linked electronically to your passport — and from 25 February 2026, carriers are legally required to deny boarding to any passenger who cannot present one. The grace period has ended.
This guide covers everything EU citizens need to know in 2026: who needs an ETA, what it costs, how to apply correctly, how long it takes, what it allows — and exactly what to do if something goes wrong. We have also added dedicated sections for travellers from Albania, Spain, and Poland who are searching for country-specific guidance.
1. What Is the UK ETA — and Why Does It Exist?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is a digital pre-clearance system introduced by the UK Home Office as part of its post-Brexit border modernisation programme. It is the British equivalent of the US ESTA or the Canadian eTA — systems that many EU travellers will already be familiar with from visiting those countries.
An ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the UK. What it does is give your airline, ferry operator, or Eurostar confirmation that you have pre-clearance to travel. Without that digital confirmation, carriers cannot legally allow you to board.
The scheme was introduced in phases. Gulf Cooperation Council nationals were brought in first in late 2023. Non-European visa-exempt countries — including the United States, Canada, and Australia — followed in early 2025. EU nationals were added on 2 April 2025, completing the rollout across all visa-exempt visitors worldwide.
From this date, the UK government’s ‘no permission, no travel’ policy is in full effect. A grace period that previously allowed some leniency has ended. Carriers now face civil penalties if they board passengers without a valid ETA. EU travellers without one will be refused boarding — regardless of travel history, employment status, or previous UK visits.
Once you hold a valid ETA, you can check your UK ETA application status at any time through the official UKVI portal — a step we recommend doing 24–48 hours before departure to confirm everything is in order.
Read this detailed guide that explains the particular characteristics of these citizens.
2. Do All EU Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Yes — with one exception. All 27 EU member states require their citizens to obtain a UK ETA for short visits. The sole EU country exempt is Ireland, due to the longstanding Common Travel Area (CTA) agreement between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Note for Albanian travellers: Albania is not an EU member state, but Albanian nationals are also required to obtain a UK ETA for visa-free travel to the UK. See the dedicated section below in Albanian (Shqip) for a full guide tailored to Albanian citizens.

3. Who Is Exempt from the UK ETA?
Not everyone needs an ETA. The following categories are exempt:
| Category | ETA Required? | Document Needed at Border |
|---|---|---|
| British citizens (incl. dual nationals) | No | Valid British passport or Certificate of Entitlement |
| Irish citizens | No | Any valid travel document |
| EU citizens with UK Settled Status (EUSS) | No | Valid passport + EUSS digital status verified |
| EU citizens with UK Pre-Settled Status | No | Valid passport + EUSS digital status verified |
| Holders of a valid UK visa | No | Valid visa in current passport |
| Legal residents of Ireland (visa-exempt nationalities, within CTA) | No | Proof of Irish legal residency |
| Individuals with Right of Abode in the UK | No | Certificate of Right of Abode |
If you are an EU citizen with Settled or Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), you do not need a UK ETA. However, your digital EUSS status must be active and linked to the exact passport you are travelling with. If the automated carrier check cannot verify your status against your current travel document, you may be refused boarding even though you are legally exempt. Check your UKVI account is current before every trip.
4. UK ETA Cost in 2026: £20 — The Complete Fee Breakdown
As of 9 April 2026, the UK government fee for an ETA is £20 per person (approximately €23). This follows parliamentary approval of the fee cap increase in March 2026. The fee is a one-time payment covering two years of unlimited travel to the UK and is non-refundable regardless of the outcome.
Although the UK government fee increased from £16 to £20 in April 2026, we have reduced our handling fee to ensure our total assisted application prices remain exactly the same as before — €69 (Regular), €99 (Priority), €149 (Dedicated Agent). The government fee increase does not affect what you pay us. You continue to benefit from expert form review, error checking, and dedicated agent support at the same rates.
| Fee Element | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UK Government fee (from April 2026) | £20 / ~€23 per person | Non-refundable — applies to all ages |
| Previous government fee (before April 2026) | No longer applicable — increased April 9, 2026 | |
| Children and infants | £20 per person | Same fee for every traveller, including babies |
| Family of 4 (example) | £80 total government fee | 4 separate applications — no family discount |
| Assisted application (Regular) | €69 | Includes government fee + expert review |
| Assisted application (Priority ~24h) | €99 | Includes government fee + priority processing |
| Assisted application (Dedicated Agent ~12h) | €149 | Fully managed, urgent travel |
| Validity | 2 years from issue | Or until passport expiry — whichever comes first |
| Number of trips | Unlimited | Within the 2-year validity window |
| Maximum stay per visit | Up to 6 months | Tourism, business, family visits |
Why did the UK ETA fee increase in April 2026?
The UK Parliament approved the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Amendment Order 2026 on 3 March 2026, raising the ETA fee cap from £16 to £20. The government implemented the new rate on 9 April 2026. This is a government decision affecting all ETA applicants worldwide, applied regardless of the channel used to apply. Our service fee has been reduced to ensure the total cost you pay us is unaffected.
Using a professional assistance service: what does that mean for cost?
The official route — through the UK ETA app or GOV.UK — charges the £20 government fee only. Professional assistance services such as application-eta.uk charge an additional service fee in exchange for expert form review, error checking, document verification, and dedicated agent support. Our three tiers remain: Regular (€69), Priority (€99), and Dedicated Agent (€149) — prices unchanged despite the government increase.
5. How to Apply for a UK ETA: Step-by-Step
The application itself takes approximately 10 minutes. Here is exactly what to prepare and what to expect at each stage.
What you will need before you start
- A valid passport — the same one you will use to travel. The ETA is linked to this specific document number.
- A clear photograph of your face — plain white or light background, no glasses, no hat, no shadows. See our full UK ETA photo requirements guide before you apply.
- An email address to receive your confirmation and ETA details.
- A payment method: credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
An incorrect or blurry photo is the single most common reason ETA applications are delayed or flagged for manual review. Before applying, review our detailed UK ETA photo requirements page — including selfie specifications, passport photo standards, and examples of accepted vs rejected images. Getting this right the first time saves days.
The five steps of the application
- Complete the application form with your biographical details exactly as they appear in your passport. Any discrepancy — including a missing middle name, a hyphen, or an accent — can cause a mismatch with carrier checks.
- Answer the suitability and criminality questions honestly. These cover criminal convictions, previous immigration issues, and health declarations. Deliberately incorrect answers are a serious matter.
- Submit your photograph. Ensure it meets the UK ETA photo requirements — full face, plain light background, no glasses. The UK ETA app can scan your passport’s biometric chip and capture your photo automatically — this is the most reliable method.
- Pay the government fee (£20 from April 2026).
- Receive confirmation by email. Most applications are decided within minutes. A small percentage require additional checks and may take up to three working days. You can check your ETA application status online at any time after submitting.
Your ETA is electronically linked to the specific passport number used during the application. If you renew your passport after applying — even one day before your trip — your ETA is no longer valid for that document. You must apply again with the new passport. This is one of the most common and entirely avoidable reasons people are refused boarding.
6. How Long Does It Take? Processing Times Explained
The vast majority of ETA applications are processed automatically within minutes. However, a small proportion require manual review by the Home Office and can take up to three working days.
| Application Route | Typical Time | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| Official UK ETA app or GOV.UK (self-service) | Minutes to 3 working days | Straightforward applications with no urgency |
| application-eta.uk — Regular (€69) | Standard timeline with pre-submission expert review | Travellers who want their form checked before it is sent |
| application-eta.uk — Priority (€99) | Approx. 24 hours | Trips booked within the next 2–5 days |
| application-eta.uk — Dedicated Agent (€149) | Approx. 12 hours | Urgent travel, complex personal circumstances, peace of mind |
The Home Office advises applying at least three working days before travel. This allows time for the minority of applications that require additional checks. Applying the night before a 6am flight is a significant risk — do not leave it to the last minute.
Once submitted, you can monitor the progress of your application at any point using our UK ETA status check tool — which explains what each status (Approved, Pending, Under Review, Refused) means and what to do next.
How long is the UK ETA valid once approved?
A UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During this entire two-year window, you may travel to the UK as many times as you wish, with each individual stay lasting up to six months. There is no limit on the number of entries. The ETA cannot be extended — when it expires, you simply apply for a new one. This validity structure makes the ETA excellent value for frequent visitors, especially now that our assisted application prices remain at €69 / €99 / €149 despite the government fee increase.
7. What the UK ETA Allows — and Does Not Allow
Understanding the scope of the ETA before you travel avoids problems at the UK border.
| ✓ Permitted Under the ETA | ✗ Not Permitted Under the ETA |
|---|---|
| Tourism, sightseeing, leisure visits | Taking up employment with a UK employer |
| Visiting family or friends | Claiming UK public funds or benefits |
| Short-term business meetings and conferences | Enrolling in a full academic programme |
| Short-term unpaid volunteering | Settling or remaining in the UK long-term |
| Short-stay private medical treatment | Marrying in the UK (requires a Marriage Visitor visa) |
| Transit through UK border control (with ETA) | Staying beyond 6 months per single visit |
The ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK. Border Force officers retain the right to refuse entry at the UK border regardless of ETA approval. An ETA is a pre-clearance for the journey — the final entry decision is always made on arrival.
8. Families and Children: Every Traveller Needs Their Own ETA
Every individual travelling to the UK requires their own ETA — including newborn babies and infants. There is no such thing as a family ETA or a group ETA. A family of four must complete four separate applications and pay four separate government fees (£20 each, totalling £80 in government fees alone).
Applying on behalf of others
You can apply for an ETA on behalf of another person — including your child — using the official app or an assisted service. You will need their passport details and a suitable photograph. For children, a parent or legal guardian typically completes the application. Remember that photo requirements apply equally to children — a plain background, full face visible, no accessories.
Children under 18: what to be aware of
The ETA application for a child requires the same information as for an adult: passport details, photograph, and suitability questions answered on their behalf. Minors travelling without both parents may be asked additional questions at the UK border. This is standard practice and is not a sign of a problem with the ETA itself.
If a child has a different surname to the travelling parent or guardian, carry supporting documentation — a birth certificate or a letter from the other parent — to avoid delays at the UK border.
9. Airport Transit & Heathrow Layovers: When Do You Need a UK ETA?
Transit through UK airports is a genuine source of confusion, particularly at Heathrow — Europe’s busiest hub airport and a common connection point for travellers from across the EU, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific. The rule is straightforward once you understand the distinction between airside and landside transit.
| Transit Scenario | ETA Required? |
|---|---|
| Airside transit — connecting flight without passing through UK passport control | No ETA required |
| Landside transit — connecting flight that requires passing through UK passport control | ETA required |
| Collecting and re-checking baggage through UK customs and immigration | ETA required |
| Eurostar: travelling through London to a UK destination | ETA required |
| Ferry to a UK port with passport control | ETA required |
| Direct flight to a UK destination | ETA required |
Heathrow specifically: Terminal 5 and Terminal 3
Heathrow is the airport where transit confusion most commonly arises. Many EU travellers connect at Heathrow — particularly through Terminal 5 (British Airways) and Terminal 3 (many international carriers) — without realising that some connections require passing through UK border control. The critical question is always: does your specific connection require you to enter the UK immigration zone?
If your connecting flight departs from a different terminal and the airline requires you to collect and re-check your baggage, you will pass through passport control and you need an ETA. If you remain entirely airside and your boarding pass takes you directly to the next gate without any border checkpoint, you generally do not. When in doubt, contact your airline directly before travelling and describe your exact itinerary. The safe approach is to apply for an ETA if there is any uncertainty — the cost and process are straightforward, and the alternative risk (being denied boarding or entry) is significant.
If you are travelling to the UK as part of a cruise itinerary — whether disembarking at a UK port or transiting through UK waters — ETA requirements vary depending on whether you clear UK immigration. Passengers remaining on board and not going ashore through a UK immigration checkpoint do not generally need an ETA. However, if your cruise includes a port call where you disembark and pass through UK border control, you do. Check with your cruise line and review the Home Office guidance specific to cruise itineraries before departure.

12. Obywatele Polski i ETA do Wielkiej Brytanii — Kompletny Przewodnik 2026
Nasz zespół ekspertów sprawdza każdy wniosek przed złożeniem — wychwytując błędy i zapewniając poprawność formularza zanim trafi do Home Office. Proces trwa około 10 minut.
13. Common Mistakes That Cause Delays and Refusals
The overwhelming majority of ETA problems are caused by avoidable errors at the application stage. Here are the most common ones — and how to avoid each.
Mistake 1 — Name discrepancies
Your name on the ETA must match your passport exactly — including middle names, hyphens, and accent characters. A French passport that reads ‘Jean-François’ must be entered with the hyphen and the cedilla. A German passport showing ‘Müller’ must use the umlaut. Even a single incorrect character can cause a mismatch in the automated carrier check.
Mistake 2 — Applying with the wrong passport
If you hold dual nationality and travel on a different passport to the one used for your ETA application, your ETA will not be valid for that journey. Always apply using the passport you will present at the check-in desk and at the border.
Mistake 3 — Applying too late
Standard processing can take up to three working days. Applying on the eve of an early-morning flight is a high-risk approach. Apply at least one week before departure. If your trip is in 48 hours or less, use a Priority or Dedicated Agent service.
Mistake 4 — Renewing your passport after applying
Your ETA is bound to a specific passport document number. A newly issued passport — even if it bears exactly the same name and photograph — invalidates your existing ETA. You must apply again once you have the new passport.
Mistake 5 — Incomplete or inaccurate criminal record disclosure
The ETA application includes mandatory questions about criminal history. Failure to disclose relevant convictions is not a minor oversight — it can result in a formal refusal and potential future travel restrictions to the UK. If you have any conviction history, professional assistance is strongly recommended to ensure the disclosure is handled correctly.
Mistake 6 — Poor photograph quality
The photo must show your full face against a plain, light-coloured background with no glasses, no hat, and no strong shadows. Blurred selfies or photos with busy backgrounds are frequently rejected by the automated review system, causing delays. Before submitting, review our complete UK ETA photo requirements page — including accepted and rejected photo examples — to make sure yours passes first time.
Mistake 7 — Not checking your ETA status before travel
Even if your application was submitted days ago and you received an initial confirmation email, it is good practice to check your UK ETA status 24–48 hours before departure. In rare cases, applications that appeared to be processing smoothly can be placed under additional review. Catching this in advance gives you time to act.
14. If Your UK ETA Is Refused: What to Do Next
An ETA refusal requires careful handling, but in many cases it is resolvable. Here is what to know.
You will receive a notification explaining the general reason
Refusals fall into two broad categories: administrative (an error in the application) and discretionary (a decision based on suitability). The notification will indicate which category applies. You can also check the status of your application at any time to see the latest update from UKVI.
If the refusal was caused by an application error
You may reapply immediately with corrected information. There is no mandatory waiting period for error-based refusals. The government fee (now £20) applies to each new application, regardless of the outcome of the previous one.
If the refusal was discretionary
There is no right of appeal for a UK ETA refusal. If your application is formally refused on discretionary grounds — most commonly relating to criminal history or previous UK immigration issues — the only route to visit the UK is to apply for a standard UK Visitor Visa through a UKVI application centre. This route requires more documentation and an in-person biometric appointment, but it allows you to present your full circumstances in more detail.
The Dedicated Agent service at application-eta.uk includes a full expert review of your application before it is submitted. Agents identify errors, flag potential disclosure issues, and advise on how to present your circumstances accurately. This is particularly valuable for applicants with any criminal history, previous immigration complications, or complex personal situations where a refusal would be especially disruptive.
15. Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Irish citizen need a UK ETA?
No. Irish citizens are exempt from the UK ETA under the Common Travel Area agreement. Irish nationals may travel between Ireland and the UK without any travel authorisation.
Do I need a UK ETA if I have EU Settled Status?
No. EU citizens with Settled or Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) do not need a UK ETA. However, you must ensure your EUSS digital status is active and linked to the passport you are travelling with. Verify your UKVI account before every trip.
How long is a UK ETA valid for?
A UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During this period, you may travel to the UK as many times as you wish, with each stay lasting up to six months. The ETA cannot be extended; when it expires, you apply for a new one.
Can I extend my UK ETA?
No. A UK ETA cannot be extended. When it expires — or when your linked passport expires — you must apply for a new one. There is no renewal process; it is always a fresh application.
What is the difference between a UK ETA and a UK visa?
A UK ETA is a digital pre-clearance for nationals who already have visa-free access to the UK. It is not a visa. A UK visa is a formal immigration permission required by nationals who do not have visa-free access. EU citizens in 2026 need an ETA — not a visa — for short visits.
What happens if I try to travel without a UK ETA?
From 25 February 2026, carriers are legally required to verify ETA status before boarding. If you do not hold a valid ETA, you will be refused boarding. You will not be permitted to travel to the UK by air, sea, or rail without one.
How much does the UK ETA cost in 2026?
The UK government fee is £20 per person (approximately €23), effective from 9 April 2026 following parliamentary approval in March 2026. This is non-refundable. Our assisted application prices remain unchanged at €69 (Regular), €99 (Priority), and €149 (Dedicated Agent) — we reduced our handling fee to absorb the government increase.
Can I apply for a UK ETA if I have a criminal record?
It depends on the nature and severity of the conviction. Minor offences with short sentences do not automatically result in refusal. Serious convictions — particularly those resulting in custodial sentences of 12 months or more — are likely to lead to a formal refusal. Full and accurate disclosure is essential. If you have any conviction history, we strongly recommend using the Dedicated Agent service to ensure your application is handled correctly.
Does my baby or young child need their own UK ETA?
Yes. Every individual travelling to the UK requires their own ETA, with no exceptions for age. This includes newborns. You can apply on behalf of your child; the application process and the £20 government fee are the same for every person.
Can I use a UK ETA to work in the UK?
No. The UK ETA authorises short-term visits for tourism, business meetings, family visits, and similar purposes. It does not authorise employment. Working in the UK requires the appropriate work visa.
How do I check my UK ETA application status?
You can check your UK ETA status online at any time after submitting your application. Our status check guide explains what each status means — Approved, Pending, Under Review, or Refused — and exactly what to do in each case. We recommend checking 24–48 hours before departure to confirm everything is in order.
Do Albanian citizens need a UK ETA?
Yes. Albanian nationals who have visa-free access to the UK must obtain a UK ETA before travelling. See the dedicated Albanian-language section in this guide for full details, including how to apply, costs, and photo requirements.
Do I need a UK ETA if I am transiting through Heathrow?
It depends on whether your transit requires you to pass through UK passport control. If you remain entirely airside (within the secure departures zone, without going through immigration), you generally do not need an ETA. If your connection requires you to collect baggage, re-check in, or pass through passport control, you do need one. When in doubt, contact your airline and apply for an ETA as a precaution. See Section 9 for a full breakdown by scenario.
What are the photo requirements for a UK ETA?
Your UK ETA photo must show your full face against a plain white or light-coloured background. No glasses, no hat, no strong shadows, and the image must be in focus. For a complete breakdown of accepted and rejected photo examples, selfie requirements, and passport photo standards, see our dedicated UK ETA photo requirements guide.
