Quick Answer

Yes — all French nationals must have a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter the United Kingdom, regardless of how they travel — Eurostar, Calais-Dover ferry, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle, or by air. The ETA has been mandatory since 2 April 2025; since 25 February 2026, all carriers are required to deny boarding to passengers without a valid ETA. As of 9 April 2026, the UK government fee rose to £20 (~€23)our service prices remain unchanged at from €69 total, as we have reduced our handling fee to absorb the government increase. The application takes 10 minutes and the ETA is valid for 2 years with unlimited entries.

1. French travellers and the UK: a uniquely close relationship in Europe

The United Kingdom is the third most popular international destination for French nationals, after Spain and Italy. In 2024, according to DGAC data analysed by AirAdvisor, 12.9 million French passengers travelled to the UK — up 6.6% on 2023. Including Eurostar, ferry, and Eurotunnel journeys, an estimated 4 million French nationals visit the UK each year, making France one of the largest source markets for UK-bound travellers.

Geography explains much of this: London is 2h15 from Paris by Eurostar from Gare du Nord, with fares from €52 one-way when booking in advance. Direct flights connect Paris to multiple London airports from €32. The Calais-Dover crossing takes just 1h30 by ferry for around €30 per person.

Why do French nationals travel to the UK?

The French community in the UK is one of the largest in Europe — an estimated 350,000 to 400,000 French nationals live in and around London. Beyond family visits, French travel to the UK spans a wide range of purposes:

⚠️ Since 25 February 2026: zero tolerance on ETA

Since 25 February 2026, all travellers must hold a valid ETA to travel to the UK. Ferry from Calais or Dunkerque, Eurostar from Lille-Europe, flight from Roissy, or car through the Eurotunnel — without a valid ETA, boarding will be refused. A tolerance period ran from April 2025 to late February 2026; that period is now over.

2. Eurostar, ferry, Eurotunnel: the ETA is checked in France, before you cross

This is what surprises most French travellers: the ETA is not checked on arrival in the UK — it is checked at the point of boarding in France. Here is exactly what happens for each mode of transport.

🚄 Eurostar — Paris-Nord · Lille-Europe · Brussels-Midi → London St Pancras

The iconic transport choice for French travellers to London. Eurostar applies the same rules as airlines: the check takes place before boarding at Paris Gare du Nord, Lille-Europe, and Brussels-Midi. In practice, this happens at check-in, before passing through UK border controls — which are conducted on French soil.

  • Check point: at check-in at Paris-Nord, Lille-Europe, or Brussels-Midi
  • Without a valid ETA: denied access to the departure lounge, even if your Eurostar ticket is already purchased and paid for
  • Recommended lead time: apply for your ETA at least 72 hours before departure
  • Routes covered: Paris → London (2h15), Lille → London (1h20), Brussels → London (2h)
  • ETA linked to passport: always travel with the passport registered on your ETA

⛴️ Cross-Channel ferry — Calais · Dunkerque · Dieppe · Cherbourg · Caen · Saint-Malo · Boulogne

The ferry remains the preferred choice for families and travellers with vehicles. The ETA is mandatory from 25 February 2026 for all passengers including children and infants. It is checked by ferry operators at check-in on the French side.

  • Check point: at the departure terminal in France (Calais, Dunkerque, Dieppe, Cherbourg, Caen, Saint-Malo, Roscoff, Boulogne)
  • Operators concerned: P&O Ferries, DFDS, Brittany Ferries, Irish Ferries
  • Calais-Dover: 1h30 crossing — ETA checked at Calais terminal, not at Dover
  • Travellers with vehicles: ETA required for all vehicle occupants, including the driver
  • Terminal check-in: arrive at least 60 minutes before departure for a vehicle, 90 minutes during peak periods

🚗 Eurotunnel Le Shuttle — Coquelles (Calais) → Folkestone

The rail shuttle for cars, motorbikes, and campervans through the Channel Tunnel. The ETA is checked at the Coquelles terminal (Calais), before access to the tunnel.

  • Check point: at the Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles, during border checks
  • All occupants: every passenger in the vehicle must have their own ETA
  • Journey time: 35 minutes in the tunnel
  • Paris to Folkestone: approximately 2h30 door-to-door from the Paris ring road

✈️ By air — Paris-CDG · Orly · Lyon · Marseille · Bordeaux · Nantes · Toulouse · Grenoble → UK

For air travellers, the ETA is integrated into the online or desk check-in process. Airlines (Air France, easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways, Volotea, Transavia…) automatically verify the ETA at check-in.

  • Check point: at check-in (online or at the counter)
  • Without ETA: boarding pass cannot be issued
  • Destinations: London (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, City), Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Bristol
📌 Juxtaposed controls: a Franco-British particularity

Under the Le Touquet Agreements (2003), UK customs and immigration checks are conducted on French soil for Eurostar and Eurotunnel — and vice versa. When a UK officer checks your passport at Paris-Nord before your Eurostar, they also verify your ETA against the Home Office database directly.

4. How does the UK ETA work? The essentials in 5 points

FeatureDetail
NatureDigital electronic authorisation — no paper document, no stamp in passport
Linked toYour passport number — a new passport requires a new ETA
Validity2 years from issue, or until passport expiry — whichever comes first
EntriesUnlimited within the validity period
Maximum stay6 months per entry
Permitted activitiesTourism, family visits, business, short study (<6 months), transit
Not permittedPaid employment, long-term study (>6 months) — these require a visa
Processing timeMinutes for the vast majority; up to 3 working days for complex cases
Official fee (from 9 April 2026)£20 (~€23) per person — increased from £16 by parliamentary approval
Our service pricesUnchanged: €69 / €119 / €169 total — handling fee reduced to absorb government increase
Non-refundableThe government fee is not refunded if the application is refused

What exactly is an ETA — and how is it different from a visa?

An ETA is not a visa. It is a pre-entry authorisation, similar to the US ESTA or the Canadian eTA. The Home Office verifies your identity and passport in advance and finds no evident grounds for refusal. Border Force officers nonetheless retain discretionary powers to refuse entry — an ETA is not an absolute guarantee of entry, but it is indispensable for boarding.

The key difference from a visa: the ETA is granted almost automatically to the vast majority of French nationals. The rare refusals are generally linked to technical errors (photo, name, passport data) or criminal records. A visa, by contrast, requires a detailed application with supporting documents, longer lead times, and significantly higher fees.

5. Fees, the April 2026 increase & processing times

On 9 April 2026, the UK government raised the ETA fee from £16 to £20 per person (~€23), following parliamentary approval of the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Amendment Order 2026 on 3 March 2026. This is a UK government decision affecting all applicants worldwide.

📢 UK ETA fee increase April 2026 — Our prices are unchanged

Although the government fee rose from £16 to £20 (~€23) on 9 April 2026, we have reduced our handling fee so that our total assisted application prices remain exactly the same: €69 (Regular), €119 (Priority), €169 (Dedicated Agent). The government’s fee increase does not change what you pay us.

UK ETA validity: how long is it valid? (2026)

Your UK ETA is valid for exactly two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During this two-year window, you may travel to the UK as many times as you wish, with each individual stay capped at six months (180 days). There is no limit on the number of entries. When your ETA expires, you simply apply for a new one — there is no renewal or extension process. If you renew your French passport while an ETA is still active, you must apply for a new ETA on the new passport before your next trip to the UK.

💡 One ETA, two years of travel — great value for frequent France-UK travellers

For French travellers who cross regularly — whether by Eurostar for work, Ryanair for weekend breaks, or ferry for summer road trips — a single ETA at €69 covers every journey for two full years. For a family of four, that is €276 total for two years of unlimited family trips. Despite the April 2026 government fee increase, our total prices remain unchanged.

6. How to check your UK ETA status: complete guide

One of the most frequently searched questions by French travellers is: how do I know if my UK ETA is still valid? or how to check my ETA status UK? Here is exactly how to do it and what each status means.

Status What it means What to do
ApprovedYour ETA is valid and active. The carrier will confirm it automatically at check-in by scanning your passport.Nothing — you are ready to travel. Keep your reference number.
PendingYour application is in the automated processing queue. Most resolve within minutes.Wait. If still pending after 24 hours, contact us or upgrade to Priority.
Under ReviewManual Home Office review in progress. Can take up to 3 working days.Do not book non-refundable tickets until resolved. Contact us if travel is imminent.
RefusedApplication formally declined.Determine if error-based (reapply corrected) or discretionary (visa route). Contact our team for guidance.

To check your ETA status, use our UK ETA status check tool — enter your reference number and date of birth to get your real-time UKVI status. We recommend checking your ETA status 24–48 hours before any departure, even if you received an approval email weeks ago. In rare cases, an approved ETA can be suspended if new information comes to light.

📌 How do I know if my UK ETA is still valid?

The simplest way: use the UK ETA status check tool. You will need your ETA application reference number (from your confirmation email) and your date of birth. The tool connects to UKVI in real time and returns your current approval status. If you applied through application-eta.uk, you can also contact our team and we will check on your behalf before your Eurostar, ferry, or flight departure.

7. The 5 mistakes that cause French applicants to fail

Our team processes applications for French travellers every day. These are the most frequently observed causes of delays and refusals:

❌ Mistake 1 — Non-compliant selfie photo

This is the most frequent cause of delay. The Home Office automated system rejects photos with a coloured background, glasses, shadows on the face, poor lighting, or images compressed by WhatsApp or messaging apps. Our team checks every photo before submission against the current Home Office requirements.

❌ Mistake 2 — Name differs from the passport MRZ

French compound given names frequently cause problems: if your passport shows “JEAN-PIERRE” in the machine-readable zone, your application must show exactly “JEAN-PIERRE” — not “Jean-Pierre”, not “Jean Pierre”, not “JP”. Accented characters are also encoded differently in some passports (“CELINE” vs “CÉLINE” in the MRZ).

❌ Mistake 3 — Wrong passport number or expiry date

A single digit transposition invalidates the application. A French passport number consists of 2 letters and 7 digits (e.g. 12AB34567). The expiry date must be the one on the biographical page.

❌ Mistake 4 — Wrong passport registered

The ETA is strictly linked to the registered passport. If you board the Eurostar with a different passport from the one registered — because you renewed your passport in the meantime — the ETA will be invalid and you will be denied boarding. Always check which passport your active ETA is linked to before travelling.

❌ Mistake 5 — Applying too late

The vast majority of ETAs are approved within minutes, but some applications can require up to 3 working days of manual review. For Eurostar or ferry travel, where checks are conducted on French soil before boarding, a processing delay can mean a missed journey. Recommendation: apply at least 72 hours before departure — ideally at the same time as booking your ticket.

✅ What we systematically verify for you
  • Compliance of the selfie photo with Home Office requirements
  • Exact name match against the passport MRZ
  • Passport number and expiry date — character-by-character verification
  • Consistency of the entire application before submission
  • Follow-up in case of unusual delay, with our English-speaking support team

8. ETA + EES: the two separate requirements for entering the UK from France

In 2026, French travellers face two distinct systems not to be confused:

ETA (UK)EES (EU)
Issued byUK Government (Home Office)European Union (Schengen)
DirectionEntry into the UK from FranceReturn to France (Schengen zone) from the UK

Validity2 years, unlimited entriesSingle registration, valid for all Schengen travel
BiometricsPhoto + passport data (digital)4 fingerprints + facial scan
CheckedAt boarding in FranceOn arrival in France when returning from the UK
📌 What this means in practice for your Eurostar return journey

Outbound (France → UK): Your ETA is checked by UK officers at Paris-Nord or Lille-Europe. Return (UK → France): At St Pancras or Folkestone, French officers record your crossing in the EES system. For French nationals (EU citizens) returning home, you use the EU/Schengen lane on the return journey.

9. City by city: Paris, Toulouse, Grenoble, Boulogne, Dinard, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Lille & beyond

France sends travellers to the UK from across its territory — not only from the Paris region. Data from our applicant base and Google Search Console confirms strong intent from travellers based in Paris, Toulouse, Grenoble, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dinard, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Lille. Each city has its own travel pattern and specific ETA considerations.

🗼 Paris — The Dominant Origin, Multiple Routes and Options

Paris is by far the largest source of UK-bound travellers from France, accounting for the majority of French ETA applications. Parisian travellers have the widest choice of routes of any French city:

  • Eurostar from Paris-Gare du Nord: Paris → London St Pancras in 2h15 — the most popular route. ETA checked at check-in at Gare du Nord by UK Border Force under juxtaposed controls.
  • Flights from Paris-CDG or Orly: Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Volotea to Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Luton, Stansted. ETA checked at online check-in or counter.
  • Eurotunnel from Coquelles: Paris by car via A1/A16, then Eurotunnel. Approximately 3h30 door-to-door.

Paris travellers are also the most likely to make a UK ETA application en français — our service fully supports French-language applications and French-language customer support. If you are looking to make a uk eta application en français, our team handles the full process on your behalf.

📌 UK ETA application in French — Paris travellers

Our full application service is available with French-language support. Whether you are departing from Paris-Nord, CDG, or Orly, we guide you through each step — photo verification, MRZ name check, payment in Euros. Demande d’ETA Royaume-Uni en français — our team is available 24/7.

🌸 Toulouse — South-West France, Ryanair and Volotea to the UK

Toulouse is one of the most important regional sources of UK-bound travellers in southern France. Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (TLS) offers direct connections to multiple UK destinations, making it the natural gateway for travellers from the Occitanie region, the Pyrenees area, and the wider South-West.

  • Key routes: TLS → London Stansted (Ryanair, ~2h) · TLS → London Luton (Wizz Air) · TLS → Manchester (Jet2) · TLS → Bristol (easyJet, seasonal)
  • ETA check: at airline check-in at Blagnac — automated ETA verification at passport scan. Ryanair’s check-in closes 40 minutes before departure — the same tight closure as at Marseille and Bordeaux. An unresolved ETA issue at Toulouse means a missed flight with no refund.
  • Who travels: Airbus / aerospace industry professionals with business in Bristol and the UK; students at UK universities; leisure travellers visiting London, Scotland, and Wales; the large British expat community in the Haute-Garonne and Tarn who return home to the UK regularly.
  • Toulouse to the Pyrenees: ski tourism in the winter, cycling and hiking in summer — many British outdoor tourists arrive via Toulouse and travel into the region. Their French hosts who visit the UK need an ETA.
  • Timing: Apply for your ETA at least 72 hours before departure from Blagnac. Do not leave it to the morning of your flight.

🏔️ Grenoble — Alpine Gateway, Ryanair to Stansted

Grenoble occupies a distinctive position: it is one of the few French regional cities with a direct UK connection operated primarily by a budget airline, and its traveller profile is shaped by the Alps economy and the large international scientific community based there.

  • Key routes: Grenoble-Alpes-Isère Airport (GNB) → London Stansted (Ryanair, seasonal winter and summer services, ~2h)
  • ETA check: at Ryanair check-in at GNB — same 40-minute closure rule. Grenoble Airport is smaller than Marseille or Lyon; the check-in area fills up quickly on popular departure days. Arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before departure.
  • Who travels: Scientists and researchers at ESRF, ILL, CEA, and the many international research institutes around Grenoble — a significant proportion of whom have colleagues, collaborators or families in the UK; ski and outdoor tourism professionals; students; and French-British families in the Isère and Savoie departments who make regular trips to the UK.
  • Grenoble’s scientific community: the city hosts one of the highest concentrations of international researchers in Europe. Many hold both French and UK academic connections. Their ETA — valid for two years — is particularly valuable for frequent short research visits.
  • Seasonal note: Ryanair’s Grenoble–Stansted service is particularly popular in winter (ski season) and summer. During peak periods, apply your ETA at least a week before departure.

⚓ Boulogne-sur-Mer — The Original Cross-Channel City

Boulogne-sur-Mer holds a special place in the history of Franco-British travel. Long before the Channel Tunnel and the Eurostar, Boulogne was the primary crossing point for travellers between France and England. Today, while the direct Boulogne-Dover ferry service has ceased, the city remains a significant waypoint for UK-bound travellers from northern France who use the nearby Calais or Dunkerque terminals — and many Boulonnais still think of the UK crossing as their most natural international journey.

  • Primary route: By car via the A16 to Calais (30 minutes) then ferry to Dover, or Eurotunnel at Coquelles (25 minutes from Boulogne). ETA checked at the Calais terminal or Coquelles.
  • Alternative: Train to Lille-Europe (1h) then Eurostar to London. ETA checked at Lille-Europe.
  • Who travels: Boulonnais families with strong cross-channel ties; fishing and maritime industry professionals with UK connections; day-trippers and short-break visitors to the UK; residents of the Côte d’Opale who treat the UK as a nearby neighbour destination.
  • Historic connection: the Boulonnais community has maintained close cross-channel ties for centuries — a particularly high proportion of local families have relatives or friends in south-east England. These are exactly the frequent, low-key travellers for whom a two-year unlimited ETA makes the most practical sense.

🌊 Dinard — Brittany’s Ryanair Gateway to London

Dinard may be a small city, but Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport (DNR) punches well above its weight as a UK connection point for Brittany. Ryanair operates a direct service from Dinard to London Stansted — historically one of the most popular routes for British tourists visiting Brittany, and a convenient return option for Bretons visiting the UK.

  • Key route: DNR → London Stansted (Ryanair, ~1h45 — seasonal)
  • ETA check: at Ryanair check-in at Dinard — 40-minute closure. Dinard Airport is very small; the check-in zone has limited capacity. On peak departures, arrive at the airport at least 1.5–2 hours before your flight.
  • Who travels: French residents of Ille-et-Vilaine, Côtes-d’Armor, and the broader Brittany region visiting the UK; return travellers from British tourism in Brittany; Anglo-Breton families with ties across the Channel; and travellers connecting through Saint-Malo (just 15 minutes from the airport) who use Dinard as a regional air hub.
  • Ferry alternative from Saint-Malo: Brittany Ferries operates routes from Saint-Malo to Portsmouth (8h45 overnight) and Poole. These ferry crossings also require a valid ETA — checked at the Saint-Malo terminal before boarding.
  • Seasonal timing: Ryanair’s Dinard–Stansted service is seasonal. Check availability and apply for your ETA when you confirm your booking — do not leave it to the week before departure, especially in peak summer season when the Priority plan is recommended.

🏙️ Lyon — France’s Second City, Direct Flights to Heathrow and Gatwick

Lyon is the second most important source of UK-bound travellers in France after Paris. From Lyon-Saint-Exupéry (LYS), travellers have direct routes to London without any Paris connection.

  • Key routes: LYS → Heathrow (1h55, Air France / British Airways codeshare) · LYS → Gatwick (1h50, easyJet)
  • ETA check: at airline check-in at LYS — automated, same as at CDG or Orly.
  • Who travels: business travellers (finance, pharma, biotech), tourists, students, Lyon’s British expat community returning home.
  • Timing note: easyJet check-in at LYS closes 30 minutes before departure. Apply your ETA at least 72 hours in advance.

☀️ Marseille — South of France, Ryanair to Stansted

Marseille represents a distinctly different travel pattern. Rather than Eurostar or Air France, the dominant UK route from Marseille-Provence Airport (MRS) is Ryanair to London Stansted — a budget option attracting a high proportion of leisure travellers and the large community of British expats who have settled in Provence and regularly visit the UK.

  • Key routes: MRS → Stansted (2h10, Ryanair) · MRS → Gatwick (easyJet, seasonal)
  • Ryanair check-in closes 40 minutes before departure at Marseille. Arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before your flight.
⚠️ Marseille — Ryanair’s 40-Minute Check-In Cutoff

An unresolved ETA issue at Marseille means a missed flight with no refund under Ryanair’s standard fare rules. Apply at least 72 hours before departure — not at the airport.

🍷 Bordeaux — Wine Tourism, British Expat Community, Ryanair + Eurostar via Paris

Bordeaux has one of the largest British expat communities in France — an estimated 50,000+ British nationals live in the Gironde and wider South-West region. From Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport (BOD), Ryanair operates to London Stansted.

  • Key routes: BOD → Stansted (1h45, Ryanair) · BOD → Paris + Eurostar (total ~5h to London)
  • ETA check at BOD: at Ryanair check-in — 40-minute closure. Same risk of missing the flight without a pre-approved ETA.
  • A two-year unlimited ETA is particularly valuable for repeat Bordeaux–UK travellers: one application covers the entire year of regular trips.

🚄 Lille — The Closest French City to London, the Underrated Eurostar Hub

Lille-Europe station is just 1h20 from London St Pancras by Eurostar, making Lille the closest major French city to the UK capital. Thousands of French professionals commute London–Lille regularly.

  • Route: Lille-Europe → London St Pancras (1h20, Eurostar direct)
  • ETA check: at Eurostar check-in at Lille-Europe — UK Border Force officers conduct juxtaposed controls here, on French soil.
  • Eurostar check-in closes 30 minutes before departure at Lille-Europe. Given the short journey time, many travellers arrive at the station as if boarding a domestic train — with too little time for any ETA issue to be resolved.
⚠️ Lille — The Last-Minute Risk

Lille-based travellers are statistically more likely to book and travel on the same day. If an ETA is not already in place, a same-day Eurostar departure is only safely covered by the Dedicated Agent Plan (1–6 hour processing, €169).

10. UK ETA eligible nationalities: Albania and the full list

Alongside French nationals, a growing number of searches from France concern travellers of other nationalities living in France who are asking: is my nationality eligible for a UK ETA? — and in particular, are Albanian nationals eligible for a UK ETA?

Albania and the UK ETA: what changed in 2026

Albanian nationals have seen significant changes in their UK travel rights in recent years. As of 2026, Albanian citizens are among the nationalities eligible to apply for a UK ETA — rather than requiring a full UK visa — following the expansion of the ETA scheme to additional nationalities. This is a significant development for the Albanian community in France and across Europe.

📌 UK ETA eligible nationalities: Albania confirmed

Albanian nationals are now included in the UK ETA eligible nationalities list. If you hold an Albanian passport and are travelling to the UK — whether from France, Belgium, or elsewhere in Europe — you can apply for a UK ETA through our service. The process, cost, and validity (2 years, unlimited entries, 6 months per stay) are the same as for French nationals. See our full list of eligible nationalities for all 85+ countries currently included in the UK ETA scheme.

How to check if your nationality is eligible for a UK ETA

The Home Office maintains an official list of nationalities eligible for the UK ETA scheme. Currently, over 85 nationalities are included — covering most of Europe (EU + EEA + associated states), as well as the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and many others. If your nationality is on the eligible list, you apply for an ETA rather than a visa for short visits.

Key nationalities confirmed eligible as of April 2026:

  • All 27 EU member states (except Ireland — exempt under CTA)
  • Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein
  • United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore
  • Albania — now confirmed eligible
  • And 70+ other nationalities — see the complete eligible countries list

If your nationality is not on the ETA eligible list, you will need to apply for a standard UK visitor visa instead. Contact our team if you are unsure which route applies to your passport.

✅ Your ETA in 10 minutes — expert review included

Our team checks your photo, your name (MRZ), and all your data before submission to the Home Office. English-speaking support 24/7. 11. FAQ — Every question French travellers ask about the UK ETA

🚄 Questions about Eurostar and ferry travel

Do I need an ETA if I take the Eurostar from Paris?

Yes, absolutely. The ETA is mandatory for all travel to the United Kingdom, including via Eurostar from Paris-Nord, Lille-Europe, or Brussels-Midi. The check takes place at check-in at the station, before you even reach the UK border controls conducted on French soil. Without a valid ETA, Eurostar will refuse you access to the departure lounge, even if your ticket is already paid for.

What about the Calais-Dover ferry with my car?

Yes, an ETA is mandatory. It is checked at the Calais terminal (for P&O Ferries and DFDS). Every passenger in the vehicle must have their own individual ETA, including children and infants. Arrive at the terminal at least 60 minutes before departure (90 minutes during busy periods).

Is the ETA checked at Calais or at Dover?

At Calais — before boarding, on French soil. Under the Franco-British juxtaposed controls system, UK Home Office officers conduct their checks on French territory. If your ETA is invalid, you will be turned back before boarding the ferry, not on arrival at Dover.

Is an ETA required for Eurotunnel Le Shuttle?

Yes. Eurotunnel Le Shuttle (the car and motorcycle shuttle from Coquelles/Calais to Folkestone) is subject to the same ETA requirement. Every passenger in the vehicle must have their own ETA. Checks take place at the Coquelles terminal before access to the tunnel.

I have an Eurostar/ferry ticket already booked but no ETA. What should I do?

Apply for your ETA immediately through our service. The majority of applications are approved within minutes. If your departure is within 24 hours, choose the Dedicated Agent plan (€169, processing in 1–6 hours). Never head to the station or terminal without having received your ETA approval confirmation email.

I’m taking Brittany Ferries from Saint-Malo or Caen — is it the same?

Yes. The ETA is mandatory for all ferry crossings to the United Kingdom from all French ports: Saint-Malo, Caen, Cherbourg, Dieppe, Dunkerque, Calais, Roscoff. All operators have applied the same rule since 25 February 2026.

🏙️ Questions about regional cities

I fly from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry to Heathrow with Air France. Do I need an ETA?

Yes. The ETA requirement applies to all flights to the United Kingdom regardless of departure airport. Air France checks your ETA at check-in at Lyon-Saint-Exupéry, exactly as it does at Paris-CDG. Without a valid ETA linked to your passport, a boarding pass cannot be issued. Apply at least 72 hours before your departure from Lyon.

I take Ryanair from Marseille to Stansted. What are the specific ETA rules?

The same ETA requirement applies — Ryanair checks your ETA at check-in at Marseille-Provence Airport. Ryanair’s check-in closes 40 minutes before departure at Marseille. If your ETA is not already approved at check-in, you cannot board and Ryanair will not refund your fare. Apply at least 72 hours in advance.

I fly from Toulouse to the UK — what do I need to know?

Yes, you need a UK ETA. Ryanair operates from Toulouse-Blagnac to Stansted and applies the same 40-minute check-in closure rule. Apply for your ETA at least 72 hours before departure. If you are in the Airbus / aerospace sector and travel frequently between Toulouse and Bristol or the UK, your two-year ETA covers all those journeys with a single application.

I travel from Grenoble to London by Ryanair. Do I need an ETA?

Yes. Ryanair operates from Grenoble-Alpes-Isère Airport to Stansted (seasonal service). The same ETA requirement and 40-minute check-in closure applies. Grenoble Airport is small — arrive early and make sure your ETA is already approved before you leave for the airport.

I travel regularly between Lille and London for work. Do I need to apply every time?

No — one ETA covers all your journeys for 2 years, with unlimited entries. If you commute London–Lille regularly, you apply once and the same ETA covers every Eurostar journey for two years. You only need a new ETA if your passport expires or you renew your passport. Eurostar check-in at Lille-Europe closes 30 minutes before departure — arrive at least 30–45 minutes early.

I live near Bordeaux and visit family in the UK a few times a year. How does the ETA work for me?

You apply once and the ETA covers all your visits for 2 years, with unlimited entries. Whether you fly Ryanair from Bordeaux-Mérignac or take the TGV to Paris and then the Eurostar, the same ETA is valid. It is linked to your passport — make sure you travel with the passport you registered when applying.

I depart from Dinard or Boulogne. Do the same ETA rules apply?

Yes, identical rules. From Dinard Airport (DNR), Ryanair operates seasonal flights to Stansted — the same 40-minute check-in closure and ETA check apply. From Boulogne-sur-Mer, most travellers access the UK via Calais (30 minutes by car) for the ferry or Eurotunnel — ETA checked at the Calais or Coquelles terminal before boarding. Apply at least 72 hours before departure.

📋 Questions about the application process

Do I need a UK ETA? (Do French nationals need one?)

Yes. Since 2 April 2025, all French nationals must hold a valid ETA to enter the United Kingdom, regardless of mode of transport. Since 25 February 2026, carriers are required to deny boarding without a valid ETA — the tolerance period is over. This applies whether you take the Eurostar, a ferry, the Eurotunnel, or a flight.

How much does the UK ETA cost in April 2026? What changed?

The UK government fee rose from £16 to £20 (~€23) on 9 April 2026, following parliamentary approval on 3 March 2026. Our service prices remain unchanged: €69 (Regular), €119 (Priority), €169 (Dedicated Agent) — we have reduced our handling fee to absorb the government increase. All our prices include the government fee.

Can I make a UK ETA application in French (en français)?

Yes. Our service at application-eta.uk offers full French-language support throughout the application process — from filling in your details and uploading your photo to our customer support team. If you prefer to make your demande d’ETA UK en français, our team handles your application with French-language communication at every step. The Home Office itself processes all applications in English, but we manage the entire interface on your behalf.

How long is the UK ETA valid for? (UK ETA validity 2026)

Your UK ETA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. During this two-year period, you can travel to the UK an unlimited number of times, with each stay capped at a maximum of 6 months (180 days). There is no limit on the number of entries. The ETA cannot be extended or renewed — when it expires, you apply for a new one.

How do I know if my UK ETA is still valid? How to check my ETA status UK?

Use the UK ETA status check tool — enter your application reference number and date of birth to get your real-time UKVI status. Status options are: Approved (ready to travel), Pending (processing in progress), Under Review (up to 3 working days), or Refused. We recommend checking your ETA status 24–48 hours before every departure, even if you received an approval email previously. If you applied through our service, contact us and we will verify your status before your Eurostar or flight.

How long does it take to get the ETA?

The majority of applications are approved within minutes. Some cases may take up to 24 hours. A small number require manual review lasting up to 3 working days. Our recommendation: apply at least 72 hours before departure — particularly important for Eurostar and ferry travel, where checks take place at boarding on French soil.

Does my 3-year-old need an ETA?

Yes. Every traveller regardless of age — including infants — must have an individual ETA linked to their own passport. There is no family ETA. For minors, our service offers a 10% discount on the handling fee. Ensure your child has a valid biometric passport — national identity cards are no longer accepted.

I renewed my passport — is my ETA still valid?

No. The ETA is linked to the passport number. As soon as you obtain a new passport — even if your old ETA is still within its 2-year validity period — you must apply for a new ETA with the new passport number. The old ETA is automatically invalidated. Never travel with a passport different from the one registered on your ETA.

Can I use my national identity card instead of a passport?

No. The French national identity card has not been accepted for entry into the United Kingdom since 1 October 2021 (Brexit). A valid biometric passport is mandatory — and this is the passport the ETA must be linked to.

Do I need to print the ETA or show it on my phone?

Neither. The ETA is entirely digital and linked to your passport number in the Home Office database. Carriers and border officers verify it directly by scanning your passport. The confirmation email is simply a record for your own information — you do not need to present it at any point.

How many times can I enter the UK with a single ETA?

An unlimited number of times during the 2-year validity period, subject to a maximum stay of 6 months per entry. If you take the Eurostar regularly for business trips or visit family in London several times a year, a single ETA covers all those journeys.

🌍 Questions about nationalities, Scotland, and special cases

Are Albanian nationals eligible for a UK ETA?

Yes. As of 2026, Albanian nationals are included in the UK ETA eligible nationalities list and can apply for a UK ETA rather than requiring a full UK visa for short visits. If you hold an Albanian passport and are based in France or elsewhere in Europe, you can apply through our service. The same ETA rules apply: £20 government fee from April 2026, 2-year validity, unlimited entries, maximum 6 months per stay. See our full list of UK ETA eligible nationalities.

Is the ETA valid for Scotland and Wales?

Yes. The ETA is issued by the UK Government and is valid throughout the entire United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Whether you are visiting Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, or London, a single ETA is sufficient.

I hold a UK work visa. Do I still need an ETA?

No. If you hold a valid UK visa (work visa, student visa, family visa…), you do not need an ETA — the visa replaces it. Similarly, if you have Settled Status or Pre-Settled Status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you do not need an ETA.

I am French but live in Belgium. Do I need an ETA?

Yes. It is your nationality that determines the ETA requirement, not your country of residence. As a French national, you need an ETA regardless of which European country you live in. If you take the Eurostar from Brussels-Midi to London, the check takes place in Brussels before boarding.

⚠️ Questions about refusals and special cases

My ETA application was refused. What should I do?

Don’t panic — many refusals are technical and resolvable. Check whether the refusal relates to the photo (most common), a name discrepancy, or a passport data error. If you applied through our service, contact us at [email protected] — our team will analyse the reason and guide you through a corrected new application. A refusal does not necessarily mean a permanent bar.

I have a criminal record. Can I still get an ETA?

It depends on the nature and date of the offences. An ETA is not automatically refused on the grounds of a criminal record — the Home Office assesses each case individually. Minor historic offences are generally not an obstacle. Serious offences may lead to refusal. Answer the 8 suitability questions honestly. In the event of refusal, a visa may sometimes be considered depending on the circumstances.
