7. US Passport Rules for the UK ETA

Your US passport is the only document you need to apply for and use a UK ETA. Four specific passport rules catch American travellers off guard more than any other aspect of the system.

Rule 1 — Your passport must be biometric

All US passports issued since 2006 contain a biometric chip — identifiable by the small gold camera icon on the cover. A pre-2006 passport without a chip would require manual data entry. In practice, a pre-2006 passport is now over 20 years old and almost certainly expired — this affects very few travellers today.

Rule 2 — One ETA per passport, not per person

Your ETA is linked to your specific passport number. If you renew your US passport — even with years of ETA validity remaining — the ETA linked to the old passport becomes invalid the moment you travel on the new one. Apply for a new ETA on your new passport before your next UK trip. Do not discover this at the check-in counter. Rule 3 — Six-month validity is recommended

The UK does not formally require six months’ validity beyond your visit date, but some airlines apply their own six-month rule. US passport renewal wait times have been significant in recent years. Renew well before any planned UK trip to avoid this issue entirely.

Rule 4 — Dual US-British citizens must travel on their British passport

If you hold both a US and British passport, you must enter the UK on your British passport. British citizens cannot enter the UK on an ETA. Attempting to enter on your US passport with an ETA when you are actually a British citizen is a breach of UK immigration rules. Enforcement has tightened significantly since February 2026. 9. US-Specific Scenarios: Dual Citizens, Ireland, Remote Work & Families

Dual US-British citizens

This is the single most consequential rule for American travellers with British heritage. Since February 25, 2026, dual US-British citizens must enter the UK using their British passport — or a Certificate of Entitlement proving British citizenship. The US Embassy in London explicitly flagged this in its February 2026 travel advisory.

If you have British heritage — a British parent or grandparent — and have never investigated whether you might hold British citizenship, now is the time. Families and children: UK ETA for US families travelling to the UK

Every member of your family travelling to the UK needs their own individual UK ETA — including infants and newborns. There is no family ETA or group ETA. A family of four must complete four separate applications and pay four separate government fees (£20 each from April 2026, totalling £80 in government fees). Crossing from Ireland into Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom. The land border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland has no formal checkpoints — you can drive across without being stopped. However, legally, US citizens crossing this border require a valid UK ETA. If you are travelling from Dublin to Belfast by road or rail, you need an ETA. This is confirmed by both the US Embassy in London and the Home Office, and is frequently overlooked by travellers who assume Ireland and Northern Ireland share the same entry rules. They do not.

Remote work — the rule Americans most frequently get wrong

This is the most commonly misunderstood restriction and the most likely to cause problems at the UK border. Working remotely for a US employer while physically in the UK is not permitted on a UK ETA.

The Home Office’s position is consistent: being physically in the UK while conducting work — regardless of who your employer is, where your salary is paid, or whether you interact with any UK person or entity — requires a work visa. This catches Americans on working holidays, digital nomads, and remote employees who visit the UK for extended periods assuming “I’m working for an American company so it doesn’t count.” It counts.

UK Border Force does ask about remote work at the border. A phone or laptop examination that reveals active remote work during a UK visit can result in being refused entry. If you plan to work remotely during a UK trip, even for a week, consult an immigration solicitor before travelling.

Once you have submitted your UK ETA application through application-eta.uk you can check your electronic travel authorisation (ETA) status at any time. This is particularly important in the 48 hours before departure.

What each ETA status means

We recommend checking your ETA status at least 24–48 hours before your flight, even if you received an initial approval email days earlier. In rare cases, an approved ETA can be suspended if new information comes to light — a pre-flight check costs seconds and eliminates the risk of arriving at JFK, LAX, O’Hare, or Dulles only to find a boarding issue.

11. At UK Border Control: What to Expect

Most American ETA holders arrive at a major UK airport — Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh — or via Eurostar at St Pancras. Here is what to expect at each stage.

At check-in or boarding in the US

The airline automatically checks your ETA status when you scan your passport at check-in or the boarding gate. You do not show any ETA document — the check is invisible. If your ETA is approved and linked correctly to your passport, boarding proceeds normally. If the ETA is not found or invalid, you will be denied boarding. At the UK border — e-Gates

American passport holders aged 18 and over with a valid ETA are eligible to use UK automated e-Gates at most major airports and Eurostar terminals.
