UK ETA for Senior Citizens (US Travelers) 2026: The Complete Plain-English Guide for Over-60s
Yes — every US citizen aged 60, 70, 80 or above needs a UK ETA before travelling to the United Kingdom. There is no age exemption. The good news: the application takes about 10 minutes online, there is no consulate visit, no medical requirement, and no age-related question on the form. Your ETA lasts 2 years with unlimited trips — ideal for those planning multiple visits to see family, join a cruise, or travel with a guided tour. Apply in minutes at application-eta.uk and have your approval by email, usually within the hour. Our assisted prices start from €69 total, inclusive of the £20 UK government fee — unchanged despite the April 2026 government increase.
This guide has been reviewed and verified by Martin Cage, Senior UK ETA Specialist and former advisor to the Home Office Immigration Advisory Panel. All information on eligibility, travel methods, cruise requirements, and application procedures reflects confirmed Home Office policy as of April 2026. Last reviewed: April 2026.
If you are 60, 65, 70 or older and you are planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2026 or beyond — whether it is a long-dreamed-of journey to see the English countryside, a transatlantic cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2, a guided group tour through Scotland with Grand Circle Travel, or a visit to family who emigrated from the US decades ago — this guide was written specifically for you.
The UK ETA is new. It came into force for US citizens in January 2025 and has been fully enforced since February 25, 2026. Many American senior travelers are only now learning about it — sometimes just days before departure. This guide explains everything in clear, plain language: what the ETA is, why it exists, who needs one, how to apply without confusion, and what to expect when you arrive at a UK port, airport, or cruise terminal. We have written it specifically with the concerns of older travelers in mind.

1. What Is the UK ETA? A Plain-Language Explanation
Think of the UK ETA — Electronic Travel Authorisation — as a digital security check that the UK now requires before you travel. It is very similar to the US ESTA system that foreign visitors to America have been using for years. You fill in a short form online, pay a fee, and receive an email telling you that you are cleared to travel. Nothing changes at the actual border — you still walk through, show your passport, and continue your trip.
There is no stamp in your passport. No sticker. No document to print. No consulate appointment. The ETA is stored digitally, linked to your passport number, and checked automatically by the airline, cruise line, or rail operator when you check in. You will never see it checked — the process is invisible and takes seconds. What you will receive is a confirmation email, which is worth keeping for your records.
Before 2025, Americans could travel to the UK with nothing but a valid US passport. That has changed. Since January 8, 2025, every US citizen needs an ETA. Since February 25, 2026, enforcement is strict: no carrier — airline, cruise line, Eurostar — will allow you to board without one. This applies regardless of your age, your travel history, or how many times you have visited the UK before.
You have probably visited the UK before with just your passport and no extra paperwork. That is no longer enough. But the ETA is not a visa — it is simply an online pre-check. If you can fill in a form on a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you can get your ETA. And if you would prefer to have someone do it for you, our team at application-eta.uk handles the entire process on your behalf.
2. Who Needs a UK ETA? Age, Nationality & Exemptions
Every US citizen needs a UK ETA — regardless of age. There is no upper age limit and no lower age limit. A 75-year-old retiree in Florida needs an ETA. A 5-year-old grandchild travelling with grandparents needs their own individual ETA. A 90-year-old travelling in a care companion’s company needs an ETA.
| Situation | ETA Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US citizen aged 60–70 | Yes | Standard application, no age-related questions |
| US citizen aged 70–80 | Yes | Same process, same fee, same validity |
| US citizen aged 80+ | Yes | No age exemption exists in current Home Office rules |
| US citizen who is a British citizen by descent | No — must use British passport | See Section 10 on dual citizens |
| US citizen with a valid UK visa | No | ETA and visa are separate; if you have a valid visa, no ETA is needed |
| US citizen with UK Settled or Pre-Settled Status | No | Settled Status supersedes ETA requirement |
| US citizen who holds Irish citizenship | No | Irish citizens are exempt; travel on Irish passport |
| US citizen on a cruise calling at a UK port | Yes | Required before boarding the ship. See Section 4. |
| US citizen transiting through Heathrow airside | Usually yes — check your specific route | See our Heathrow Transit Guide |
The Home Office ETA factsheet (April 2026) confirms that the ETA requirement applies to “all non-visa nationals” of eligible countries, with exemptions only for British and Irish citizens, those with UK visas or Settled Status, and British Overseas Territories citizens. Age is not a factor in eligibility or exemption. Source: Home Office ETA Factsheet, April 2026.
3. How American Seniors Travel to the UK: Modes of Travel & Agencies
American senior travelers reach the United Kingdom by several distinct routes, each with its own ETA implications. Understanding which route applies to you is the first step.
Direct Transatlantic Flights
The most common route for American seniors travelling to the UK is a direct flight from a major US hub — New York (JFK or Newark), Boston, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare, Los Angeles, Miami, or Atlanta — to London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW), Manchester, or Edinburgh. Airlines including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Delta, and United serve these routes.
Your ETA is checked automatically when you scan your passport at check-in or the boarding gate. You will not see it happen. If it is approved and linked to your passport number, nothing will be said. If it is missing or not found, you will be denied boarding. Always check your ETA status at application-eta.uk/uk-eta-status-check-faq/ the day before your flight.
Guided Tour Groups: Grand Circle, Trafalgar, Road Scholar, Globus & Others
A significant portion of American senior travelers to the UK travel as part of an organised escorted tour. Companies such as Grand Circle Travel, Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel), Trafalgar, Globus, Insight Vacations, and Go Ahead Tours operate popular programmes to Britain and Ireland. Many AARP members access UK tours through AARP-preferred providers including Grand European Travel and Vacations By Rail.
Even when travelling with a fully-escorted tour company, each individual traveller is personally responsible for obtaining their own UK ETA. Your tour operator will arrange flights, hotels, and ground transport — but they cannot apply for your ETA, and the Home Office does not accept group ETA applications. Every person on the tour bus must have their own individual ETA linked to their own specific passport. This is one of the most common misunderstandings among senior group travelers. If you are travelling with your spouse, you each need a separate ETA application — even though you hold the same reservation.
Eurostar Rail Service from Paris or Brussels
Many senior travelers combine a UK trip with continental Europe — arriving in France by air, spending a few days in Paris, then taking the Eurostar through the Channel Tunnel to London St Pancras. The Eurostar is a UK carrier, and ETA checks are performed at the Paris Gare du Nord or Brussels-Midi terminal before boarding. Your ETA must be valid before you reach the Eurostar check-in desk — not at the other end in London.
Eurostar passengers should particularly note: if you are travelling as part of a France + UK itinerary and you booked through a senior travel agent or tour operator, your ETA for the UK leg is still your personal responsibility. See our full transit and rail guide for Eurostar-specific details.
Cruise Ships — Southampton, Dover, Liverpool, Edinburgh & Beyond
Ocean cruising is the single most popular way for American senior citizens to visit the UK. Tens of thousands of US retirees and over-65s board cruise ships each year that call at UK ports — Southampton, Dover, Liverpool (for the Beatles and the Lake District), Edinburgh (for the Royal Mile and Scotch whisky), Belfast (for the Titanic Quarter and the Giant’s Causeway), and smaller ports including Greenock (Glasgow), Newcastle, and Hull. This is covered in full detail in Section 4 below.
Private and Chartered Travel
Some senior travelers arrive in the UK by private aircraft or private yacht. The ETA requirement applies equally to private aviation and private vessels. Your charter company or yacht captain will advise on advance notification requirements with UK Border Force, but obtaining an ETA remains your personal responsibility.
4. Cruise Passengers: What Every Senior Cruiser Must Know
If you are planning a cruise that calls at a UK port — Southampton, Dover, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Belfast, or any other British port of call — you need a UK ETA. This has been fully enforced since February 25, 2026, and applies even if you remain on board the ship while it is docked.
The reason: cruise lines including Cunard, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America, Viking Ocean Cruises, and MSC Cruises are legally required to verify that all non-exempt passengers hold a valid ETA before the ship enters UK waters. P&O Cruises, which homeports almost entirely from Southampton, explicitly states on its website that passengers must “bring evidence of your ETA — such as a screenshot or printout — to the terminal.”
Unlike an airline, where a boarding pass is scanned digitally, some cruise terminals prefer a paper copy. When you receive your ETA approval email from application-eta.uk, print it out and keep it with your passport. Your cruise line may ask to see it at the Southampton, Dover, or Liverpool terminal. A screenshot on your phone works too — but paper is more reliable if battery life or connectivity is a concern at the terminal.
Queen Mary 2 — Southampton to New York
The Queen Mary 2 transatlantic crossing is a bucket-list voyage for many American senior travelers. Cunard confirms that all passengers aboard the QM2 arriving at Southampton from New York need a valid UK ETA to disembark. If you are sailing from New York, your ETA must be obtained before you board in New York — because the ship’s manifest check happens before departure, and the UK government checks ETA status at sea via the ship’s API connection to the Home Office.
Port Calls: Going Ashore vs. Staying on Board
A common question from senior cruisers: “Do I need an ETA if I stay on the ship while it docks in Liverpool or Edinburgh?” The technical answer is nuanced, but the practical answer is yes, apply anyway. Cruise lines are required to verify ETA status for all passengers before entering UK waters, regardless of whether those passengers plan to disembark. If your ETA is missing, the cruise line faces penalties — and may refuse to allow the ship to dock. Do not risk your cruise on this technicality.
P&O Cruises states: “An ETA is required for all EU and non-EU citizens, including children under 18. You will need to bring evidence of your ETA, such as a screenshot or printout, to the terminal. Failure to obtain an ETA will result in you being denied entry to the UK or denied boarding at the terminal at your own expense.”
Major UK Cruise Ports for Senior Travelers
| Port | Key Attractions Nearby | ETA Required? |
|---|---|---|
| Southampton | New Forest, Stonehenge, Winchester, London (1.5h by train) | Yes |
| Dover | Dover Castle, Canterbury Cathedral, White Cliffs | Yes |
| Liverpool | The Beatles Story, Albert Dock, Lake District day trip | Yes |
| Edinburgh (Leith) | Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile, Scotch Whisky Experience | Yes |
| Belfast | Titanic Belfast, Giant’s Causeway, Bushmills Distillery | Yes — Northern Ireland is part of the UK |
| Greenock (for Glasgow) | Glasgow Cathedral, Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle | Yes |
| Invergordon (for Inverness/Highlands) | Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, Eilean Donan Castle | Yes |
| Portland | Jurassic Coast, Lyme Regis, Dorchester | Yes |

Apply Before Your Cruise or Tour Departs — Takes 10 Minutes
Our team manually reviews every application before submission — checking your name exactly matches your passport, your photo meets requirements, and all details are complete. Your ETA is valid for 2 years with unlimited entries. Prices unchanged despite the April 2026 UK government fee increase.
5. How to Apply — A Step-by-Step Guide for Older Travelers
The application is done online. There is no need to visit a government office, a consulate, or any physical location. You can apply from your home computer, a laptop, a tablet (like an iPad), or a smartphone. The whole process takes about 10 minutes once you have gathered your documents.
Have these ready before you begin: (1) Your US passport — the one you will travel with. (2) A recent photo of yourself on a plain white or light background — see Section 6 for photo tips written specifically for older travelers. (3) A clear photo of the information page in your passport — the page with your photo and all your details. (4) A credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express). (5) Your email address, where we will send your approval.
-
1Go to application-eta.uk and click “Apply.” Choose your service plan: Standard (€69) for trips at least a week away; Priority (€119) if you travel within the next 2–5 days; or Dedicated Agent (€169) for urgent same-day needs. All prices include the UK government fee of £20.
-
2Enter your personal details. Your name must match your passport exactly — including any middle names as they appear in the machine-readable zone (the two lines of text at the bottom of your passport photo page). Take your time here; a mismatch is the most common reason for delays.
-
3Upload your selfie photo and your passport photo. Our team manually reviews both before submission. See Section 6 for specific photo advice for senior travelers — this is where most older applicants run into problems, and we want you to get it right first time.
-
4Answer the background questions. There are 8 yes/no questions covering criminal history and previous immigration issues. For the vast majority of American senior travelers, every answer is “No.” If you have ever had a criminal conviction or an immigration issue in the UK, answer honestly — the system is cross-checked with Home Office records.
-
5Pay and submit. Veterans receive a 10% discount on the handling fee — tick the box before payment if this applies to you. Most approvals arrive within minutes to a few hours. Your approval email contains your ETA reference number — keep it safe.
-
6Check your ETA is active before you travel. Use our ETA status check tool in the 24–48 hours before departure. For cruise passengers, bring a printout or screenshot of your approval email to the terminal.
If the online process feels overwhelming, our Dedicated Agent service (€169) assigns a personal adviser who handles the entire application on your behalf. You provide your documents by email or phone, and we take care of the rest. This service is particularly popular among travelers aged 75+, those with limited computer experience, and those travelling in the next 24–48 hours. Email us at [email protected] and we will call you back.
For a full walkthrough with screenshots, see our dedicated How to Apply for a UK ETA — Step-by-Step Guide.
6. The Photo Requirements: Where Most Senior Applicants Go Wrong
The single most common cause of ETA delays for US citizens of all ages is a photo that does not meet the Home Office’s technical requirements. For older travelers, there are a few additional factors that make compliance slightly harder — and easier to get wrong without realising.
For full, illustrated requirements see our dedicated UK ETA Photo Requirements guide, which includes accepted and rejected examples. Here is a summary of the points that most affect senior applicants:
| Requirement | What This Means for You |
|---|---|
| Plain light background | A white or off-white wall is ideal. Not outside in the garden, not in front of bookshelves, not with a patterned curtain behind you. |
| No glasses | Even if you wear glasses all the time, remove them for the photo. This is a firm requirement and the most common reason for rejection in the over-65 age group, where glasses wear is highest. |
| Eyes fully open, looking directly at the camera | Avoid looking down, to the side, or at your phone screen. Hold the phone or camera at eye level — not above or below. |
| Neutral expression, mouth closed | No smiling. This is a biometric requirement — facial recognition systems need a neutral face to work accurately. |
| No hats or head coverings | Except for genuine religious headwear worn daily. Sunhats, caps, or scarves are not permitted. |
| Good even lighting, no flash glare | Natural daylight near a window is excellent. Avoid direct sunlight (which creates harsh shadows) and avoid using flash (which creates glare on skin). |
| Full face in frame, all four corners visible | Your entire face must be visible — from the top of your head to your chin — with space around the edges. |
| Sharp, in-focus image | Many older phones produce slightly blurry images in low light. Take the photo in good daylight and check it is sharp before submitting. Our team will flag it if it is not acceptable before submission. |
Taking your own selfie (holding the phone yourself) is permitted, but asking a family member or friend to photograph you against a white wall produces a better result. Stand about 60–90cm (2–3 feet) from the wall. Use natural window light. Remove your glasses. Look straight at the camera. Take 5–6 shots and choose the sharpest, most evenly-lit one. Our agents review the photo before submission and will contact you if it needs to be retaken.
7. Medical Considerations, Medications & Health-Related Questions
Many older travelers have questions about how health conditions, medications, or mobility issues interact with the UK ETA. The straightforward answer is that your health plays no direct role in the ETA application. There are no medical questions on the ETA form and no health declarations required.
Medical Questions Are Not on the ETA Form
The UK ETA asks about your passport details, your contact information, and eight yes/no questions about your background (criminal history, previous immigration issues, etc.). There are no questions about your health, medications, disabilities, or any medical conditions. Being in good or poor health has absolutely no effect on your ETA eligibility.
Bringing Medications to the UK
This is handled separately from the ETA entirely. You may bring prescription and over-the-counter medications to the UK for personal use. The Home Office recommends:
- Keep medications in their original labelled pharmacy bottles where possible.
- Carry a letter from your US physician for any controlled substances, scheduled drugs, or injectable medications.
- For stays longer than 3 months, some medications may require an import licence from the Home Office — ask your doctor if this applies to your prescription.
- Liquid medications above airline limits must be declared at airport security. Carry a doctor’s letter confirming the medical necessity.
Mobility, Disability & Accessibility at UK Borders
The UK’s major airports — Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh — and major cruise terminals including Southampton are fully equipped for passengers with mobility limitations. Here is what to expect:
- Wheelchair assistance: Request this at the time of booking your flight or cruise. Airlines and cruise lines are legally required to provide assistance free of charge under UK and EU rules. This assistance extends through UK border control.
- e-Gate accessibility: The UK’s automated e-Gates (which read your passport and check your ETA automatically) are accessible to most passengers, but Border Force staff will always direct passengers with mobility devices or assistance needs to a staffed desk where necessary. You will not be disadvantaged.
- Heathrow Terminal 2, 3, 4 & 5: All terminals are accessible. Priority lanes are available for passengers who require them. Ask your airline’s ground staff on arrival.
If you use a wheelchair, walker, scooter, or require any other mobility assistance, notify your airline and cruise line at the time of booking — not at the airport. You will be assigned a Special Assistance reference, which ensures a member of staff meets you at the aircraft door and escorts you through border control, baggage claim, and to your onward transport. This service is provided at no cost and is available at all UK international airports and major cruise terminals.
8. At the UK Border: e-Gates, Queues, and What to Expect
Most American passport holders aged 18 and over with a valid ETA can use the UK’s automated e-Gates. This is the fast lane — you scan your passport at a kiosk, the gate reads your biometric chip, checks your ETA, and opens. The whole process takes under 60 seconds. You do not speak to a Border Force officer.
Using the e-Gates as a Senior Traveler
The e-Gates at Heathrow and Gatwick are straightforward to use, but if you have any difficulty — the screen is unclear, the gate does not open, or you simply prefer human interaction — you can at any time step out of the e-Gate queue and join the staffed desk queue. Border Force staff are trained to assist all passengers, including those who are elderly, unwell, or unfamiliar with the process. There is no obligation to use an e-Gate.
At a Staffed Desk — What They May Ask
If you use a staffed desk (by choice or necessity), a Border Force officer may ask:
- What is the purpose of your visit? (Tourism, visiting family, tour group, etc.)
- Where are you staying? (Hotel name, cruise ship name, family address)
- How long do you plan to stay?
- Do you have a return ticket?
These are standard questions. Answer honestly and naturally. Have your hotel booking or cruise documents accessible — on your phone or as a printout. The officer is not looking for problems; they are completing a routine check. The vast majority of senior American travelers are through in under 5 minutes.
A UK ETA approval means you have been pre-screened and are permitted to travel to the UK. It does not constitute a legal guarantee of entry. Border Force retains the right to refuse entry to any individual if the officer believes they do not qualify as a genuine visitor. This is extremely rare for American senior tourists — but it is worth knowing.
9. Applying for a Spouse, Partner, or Grandchildren
Every person travelling to the UK needs their own separate ETA. There is no family ETA, no joint ETA, and no group application. This means:
- If you and your spouse are both US citizens, you each need your own ETA — two separate applications.
- If you are travelling with grandchildren, each child needs their own ETA, including infants and toddlers.
- You can apply on behalf of your spouse or grandchildren — you do not need the other person to be present at a computer. You simply enter their passport details and upload their passport photo and their selfie photo.
At application-eta.uk, you can submit multiple applications — one for each family member. You can apply for everyone at the same time, paying separately for each. For grandchildren with a different surname (for example, if they travel with their parent’s surname), carry a copy of their birth certificate in case UK Border Force asks about the relationship at the desk. For full guidance on family applications, see our UK ETA for Families and Children guide.
A family of two adults (Standard plan) costs 2 × €69 = €138 total. A couple plus two grandchildren: 4 × €69 = €276 total. These prices are unchanged despite the UK government’s April 2026 fee increase to £20 per person — we reduced our handling fee to absorb the difference entirely.
10. Dual US-British Senior Citizens: The Rule That Catches Many Off Guard
This is the single most consequential rule for senior American travelers with British heritage — and it catches a large number of older travelers off guard, particularly those whose families emigrated from Britain to the United States decades ago.
If you hold both US and British citizenship, you must enter the UK on your British passport. You must not apply for a UK ETA.
Many Americans of British origin — particularly those in their 60s, 70s, and 80s who were born in the UK and later naturalised as US citizens — either do not know they still hold British citizenship, or assume it lapsed when they became American. In most cases, it did not. British citizenship is not automatically renounced when you become a citizen of another country.
If you have a British parent or grandparent, or if you were born in the UK and later moved to the US, consider checking your citizenship status before applying for an ETA. If you are a British citizen travelling on a UK ETA attached to your US passport, Border Force may refuse you entry and this constitutes a breach of UK immigration rules — enforcement has tightened considerably since February 25, 2026.
American senior travelers whose parents were born in the UK may be British citizens by descent without knowing it. This is especially common among those whose parents emigrated from the UK between the 1940s and 1970s. If this describes you, investigate your citizenship status before applying for an ETA. Applying for an ETA when you are a British citizen is not only unnecessary — it could cause problems at the UK border if Border Force’s automated system identifies you as a British national attempting to enter on a foreign travel authorisation.
11. ETA Validity, Renewal, and Your Passport
Your UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your US passport expires — whichever comes first. During those two years, you can travel to the UK as many times as you like, with each individual stay capped at six months (180 days). There is no limit on the number of entries per year.
What happens when my ETA expires?
When your ETA’s two-year period ends, or when your passport expires, you simply apply for a new one. There is no renewal process — it is a fresh application each time. This will typically be needed every two years, or less frequently if your passport expires sooner.
What if I renew my US passport while my ETA is still active?
This is one of the most important rules for senior travelers to understand. Your ETA is linked to a specific passport number — not to you as a person. If you renew your US passport while you still have an active ETA, the ETA attached to your old passport is no longer valid for travel. You must apply for a new ETA using your new passport number before your next UK trip.
If you are planning a UK trip in the next 6–12 months and your passport is due for renewal, renew it first — then apply for your ETA using the new passport number. Do not apply for an ETA on a passport you are about to renew.
| Scenario | What to Do |
|---|---|
| My passport expires after my UK trip | Apply for ETA now on your current passport. All good. |
| My passport expires before my UK trip | Renew your passport first, then apply for an ETA on the new passport. |
| I renewed my passport and still have a valid ETA (from my old passport) | Apply for a new ETA using your new passport number. The old ETA is no longer usable. |
| My ETA expires during a multi-country trip that includes the UK | Apply for a new ETA before the trip — do not arrive at the UK border with an expired ETA. |
| I am travelling multiple times to the UK in the same year | One ETA covers all trips within two years. No need to reapply between trips. |

12. Frequently Asked Questions — UK ETA for Senior US Citizens
Is there an age limit for the UK ETA — do seniors over 65 need one?
There is no age exemption. Every US citizen — regardless of age — needs a UK ETA to travel to the United Kingdom. A 90-year-old traveller needs an ETA just as a 25-year-old does. The application process is identical regardless of age: there are no age-related questions, no medical declaration, and no special requirements for older applicants. If you need help applying, our Dedicated Agent service (€169) handles the entire application on your behalf. Call or email our team at [email protected].
Do I need a UK ETA for a cruise if my ship docks at Southampton or Liverpool?
Yes. Since February 25, 2026, all cruise passengers who are not exempt (British citizens, Irish citizens, those with UK visas or Settled Status) need a valid UK ETA to sail into any UK port. This applies whether you go ashore or remain on the ship. Cruise lines including P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean all verify ETA status before departure. Apply before you board at your home port — not on arrival at Southampton or Liverpool. See our full UK ETA for Cruise Passengers guide.
I wear glasses every day — do I have to remove them for the ETA photo?
Yes. The Home Office requires that glasses are removed for the ETA selfie photo, regardless of whether you wear them all the time for medical reasons. This is one of the most common reasons for photo rejection among older applicants. Remove your glasses before taking the selfie. If you have difficulty reading without glasses, take the photo first, then put them back on to fill in the rest of the form. See our full UK ETA Photo Requirements guide for all the rules and examples.
My tour operator (Grand Circle / Road Scholar / Trafalgar / Globus) hasn’t mentioned the ETA — does the tour cover it?
No. Your tour operator is responsible for flights, hotels, transport, and guided activities. The UK ETA is your personal responsibility — every individual traveller on the group must obtain their own ETA individually. Your tour operator will not apply for it on your behalf and has no legal authority to do so. Each application must be linked to one specific passport number. Apply through application-eta.uk before your tour departs.
I have a health condition — will this affect my ETA application?
No. There are no health or medical questions on the UK ETA application form. Your health does not affect your eligibility for an ETA. The ETA background questions cover criminal history and immigration issues only. You do not need to disclose any medical condition, disability, or medication in the ETA application.
Can I apply for my spouse’s UK ETA at the same time as mine?
Yes. You can submit separate ETA applications for yourself and your spouse (or any other family member) through application-eta.uk. Each application is separate and individually paid, but you can complete them back-to-back in one session. You will need your spouse’s passport details and their photo (a selfie and a passport page photo). Standard plan: €69 per person. If there are two of you, that is €138 total — unchanged despite the April 2026 government fee increase.
I was born in England and moved to the United States 40 years ago — do I need an ETA?
Almost certainly not. If you were born in the United Kingdom and hold or are entitled to British citizenship, you must enter the UK on your British passport — not your US passport with an ETA. British citizenship is generally not lost by becoming a US citizen. If you do not have a current British passport but believe you may be entitled to British citizenship (by birth in the UK, or through a British parent or grandparent), contact the UK Passport Office or a UK immigration solicitor before applying for an ETA. See Section 10 of this guide for full details.
I use a wheelchair — will the UK border be accessible?
Yes. All major UK airports and cruise terminals are fully accessible. Notify your airline and cruise line of your wheelchair or mobility assistance requirement at the time of booking. You will be assigned priority assistance that covers the entire arrivals process, including border control. If you use the automated e-Gates, Border Force staff will assist you or direct you to a staffed desk — whichever is easier. There is no ETA-specific process for wheelchair users; the ETA works identically for all passengers.
I’m travelling on the Eurostar from Paris — do I need an ETA?
Yes. Eurostar is a UK carrier, and ETA checks are performed at the Paris Gare du Nord or Brussels-Midi terminal before you board the train. You must have your UK ETA approved before reaching the Eurostar check-in desk. It is not possible to board the Eurostar to the UK without a valid ETA. Apply well in advance — at least a week before your Eurostar date is recommended. See our transit and rail guide for full Eurostar details.
How long will I be able to stay in the UK on an ETA?
Up to 6 months (180 days) per individual visit — which is far more generous than the 90-day limit on the US ESTA for visitors to America. This six-month allowance is identical to what Americans were entitled to before the ETA was introduced. Your ETA covers unlimited trips within its two-year validity period, provided each stay does not exceed 180 days. For retired seniors planning extended stays with family in the UK, the six-month allowance is a significant advantage.
I’m not good with computers — can someone apply for me?
Yes. Our Dedicated Agent service (€169) is designed exactly for this situation. You contact our team by email at [email protected] or through our website, provide your passport details and photos, and one of our advisers handles the entire application. Most applications processed via Dedicated Agent are completed within 1–6 hours. Our agents are experienced in working with senior travelers and will guide you through every step. There is no need to navigate any website yourself.
What happens if I arrive at the cruise terminal without an ETA?
You will be denied boarding. The cruise line is legally required to verify ETA status for all passengers before departure. P&O Cruises explicitly states that passengers denied boarding due to missing ETA travel documentation do so “at their own expense.” This means no refund of cruise costs. The simplest solution is to apply before you leave home — through application-eta.uk in about 10 minutes. Do not leave this until you arrive at Southampton or Liverpool.
