This guide covers the remaining large and mid-sized ETA-eligible nations not addressed in our previous regional guides. It spans Western and Central European EU members — Germany (1.3 million ETAs by June 2025, the second highest globally), France (922,793 ETAs, third globally), the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland — the three Baltic EU states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), two smaller Central European EU members (Slovakia, Slovenia), and three Latin American nations with ETA eligibility: Chile, Costa Rica and Panama.

- Population: ~84 million (largest EU member state)
- ETA eligible since: 2 April 2025 (EU expansion)
- ETAs issued: 1,300,000 by June 2025 — second highest of any nationality globally, after the USA
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)

- UK German community: Estimated 200,000+ German nationals resident in the UK
Germany: The Second-Largest ETA Nation in the World
Germany’s 1.3 million ETAs by June 2025 make it the second-largest source nation globally — reflecting both the sheer size of German outbound travel and the extraordinary density of the Germany-UK bilateral relationship. Germany and the UK are each other’s largest EU trading partners, German automotive manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen) maintain major UK presences, and London hosts one of Europe’s largest German expatriate communities.
The German Personalausweis: Most Important Practical Point
German nationals previously entered the UK on their Personalausweis (national identity card). This is no longer possible. A valid German biometric Reisepass is required. This is covered in full detail — including what to do if your Reisepass has expired — in our dedicated German citizens ETA guide. German passport renewal (Reisepassantrag) is processed through local Bürgerämter — current waiting times vary by city, with express processing available.
Germany-UK: Finance, Automotive and Culture
The Germany-UK relationship is one of Europe’s most substantive business partnerships. Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Allianz, and hundreds of German Mittelstand companies maintain London operations. The UK’s German community — concentrated in London, particularly in South Kensington and around the German School (Deutsche Schule London) — travels regularly between the two countries. Cultural tourism in both directions is strong: German visitors are disproportionately represented at the Edinburgh Fringe, the Proms and London’s museum circuit.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) — Europe’s third-busiest — operates multiple daily Heathrow services (Lufthansa, British Airways) plus Gatwick and London City connections. Munich (MUC) serves Heathrow (Lufthansa, British Airways) and City (Lufthansa CityLine). Berlin Brandenburg (BER) connects to Heathrow (British Airways), Gatwick (easyJet, Ryanair) and Stansted (Ryanair). Düsseldorf (DUS), Hamburg (HAM), Cologne (CGN) and Stuttgart (STR) all serve UK airports. Flight time Frankfurt–London is approximately 2 hours.
3. France — UK ETA Guide
France (France) — ETA at a Glance
- Population: ~68 million
- ETA eligible since: 2 April 2025 (EU expansion)
- ETAs issued: 922,793 by June 2025 — third highest of any nationality globally
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
- Passport required: French biometric passport (passeport biométrique). French Carte Nationale d’Identité is NOT accepted for UK entry.
- Key routes: Paris CDG, Orly (ORY) – London Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stansted — Air France, British Airways, easyJet, Vueling; Eurostar Paris Gare du Nord – London St Pancras (direct, 2h15min — ETA required before boarding)
- Dedicated guide: UK ETA for French Citizens — full dedicated guide
- UK French community: Estimated 150,000–200,000 French nationals resident in the UK, including a large London community
France: The Third-Largest ETA Nation and the Eurostar Dimension
France’s 922,793 ETAs by June 2025 reflects one of the world’s most intensely travelled bilateral corridors — the France-UK connection is extraordinary in volume, diversity of purpose, and geographic proximity. Paris is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes from London by Eurostar — faster than many domestic UK rail journeys — making the UK a genuine weekend trip for Parisians and a commutable business destination for professionals. The ETA must be valid before boarding Eurostar at Paris Gare du Nord or Lille — not at the UK border in St Pancras.
The French Carte d’Identité: Critical Warning
French nationals previously entered the UK on their Carte Nationale d’Identité (CNI). This is no longer possible. Only a valid French biometric passeport is accepted for UK entry. The CNI remains valid for travel across the Schengen zone but not for the UK. Full details — including what to do if your passeport has expired and you need to renew it before a UK trip — are in our dedicated French citizens ETA guide.
London: France’s Seventh-Largest City?
The French community in London is one of the most visible of any European nationality — a long-standing joke (with considerable truth) is that London is “France’s seventh-largest city.” French nationals in London work across every sector: finance (Société Générale, BNP Paribas, AXA all have major UK operations), technology, hospitality, academia, medicine and the creative industries. The French community travels regularly between London and France — family visits, holiday returns and professional trips — making the ETA a constant practical concern for this community. Every return to the UK from France requires a valid ETA on the French passport.
Paris has two primary international airports: Charles de Gaulle (CDG) with services to Heathrow (Air France, British Airways — multiple daily), Gatwick (Air France, easyJet, Vueling) and Stansted (Ryanair); and Orly (ORY) with Gatwick connections. The Eurostar from Paris Gare du Nord to London St Pancras runs approximately 18 times daily — 2 hours 15 minutes — and is the most popular single transport option for France-UK travellers. ETA check for Eurostar passengers occurs at Paris Gare du Nord before boarding. Lyon (LYS), Marseille (MRS), Nice (NCE), Toulouse (TLS), Bordeaux (BOD) and Nantes (NTE) all have direct UK connections.
4. Netherlands — UK ETA Guide
Netherlands (Nederland) — ETA at a Glance
- Population: ~18 million
- ETA eligible since: 2 April 2025 (EU expansion)
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
- Passport required: Dutch biometric passport (Nederlands paspoort). Dutch ID card (Identiteitskaart) is NOT accepted for UK entry.
- Key routes: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) – London Heathrow, Gatwick, City, Stansted — KLM, British Airways, easyJet; Eurostar Amsterdam Centraal – London St Pancras (direct, ~4hrs — ETA required); Stena Line ferry Hook of Holland – Harwich
- UK Dutch community: Estimated 50,000–70,000 Dutch nationals resident in the UK
- Dedicated guide: UK ETA for Dutch, Belgian, Austrian & Swiss Citizens
- Amsterdam transit hub: Schiphol is a major connection hub — Dutch nationals transiting UK airports on the way to other destinations need an ETA
The Netherlands and the UK: A North Sea Partnership
The Netherlands and the UK share the North Sea, extensive trade history (the Dutch East India Company pre-dates the British equivalent), and one of Europe’s most integrated bilateral economic relationships. Amsterdam Schiphol and London Heathrow together form one of the world’s busiest aviation city-pair combinations. The Netherlands is also uniquely served by the Eurostar service (Amsterdam Centraal to London St Pancras) and the Hook of Holland–Harwich Stena Line ferry — meaning Dutch travellers have three mode options for reaching the UK, all of which require a valid ETA before departure.
Ferry Travel: The Stena Line Hook–Harwich Route
The Stena Line overnight ferry from Hook of Holland to Harwich is a significant UK-Netherlands connection — popular with travellers who prefer sea crossings, those travelling with vehicles, and those who enjoy the relaxed overnight crossing rather than the intensity of an airport. Dutch nationals boarding the Hook of Holland ferry need a valid UK ETA before check-in at the Dutch port. The ETA check occurs on the Dutch side, not at Harwich on arrival.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) has multiple daily services to London Heathrow (KLM, British Airways), Gatwick (easyJet, Transavia), Stansted (Ryanair), City (KLM Cityhopper) and Manchester. The Eurostar Amsterdam–London service takes approximately 4 hours via Rotterdam and Brussels. The Stena Line Hook of Holland–Harwich overnight ferry takes approximately 6.5 hours. Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) also serves Stansted and Manchester. Flight time Amsterdam–London is approximately 1.5 hours.
5. Chile — UK ETA Guide
Chile (Chile) — ETA at a Glance
- Population: ~20 million
- ETA eligible since: 8 January 2025 (non-EU global expansion)
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately 19,000 CLP at current rates)
- Passport required: Valid Chilean biometric passport (pasaporte biométrico chileno)
- Key routes: Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL) – London via Madrid (Iberia, LATAM), Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Paris (Air France), São Paulo (LATAM). No direct Santiago–London service.
- UK Chilean community: Estimated 15,000–25,000 Chilean nationals in the UK, with a significant political exile history from the 1973 Pinochet coup era
- Notable: Chile is the most ETA-eligible Latin American nation alongside Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Guatemala, Paraguay and Uruguay
Chile and the UK: Copper, Wine and Political Exile History
Chile’s relationship with the United Kingdom carries a distinctive historical weight. Following the 1973 military coup against President Salvador Allende — in which British government policy played a complex role — thousands of Chilean political exiles arrived in the UK, establishing a community primarily in London that shaped Chilean-UK relations for decades. Today that community is well-integrated into British society, and Chile’s bilateral relationship with the UK has normalised and deepened around trade (Chile is a major copper and lithium exporter; the UK is a significant investor in Chilean mining), wine (Chilean wines are widely distributed in UK supermarkets), and academic exchange.
Chile’s ESTA-Eligible Status for US Transit
Unlike most Latin American nations, Chile is one of the few countries eligible for the US ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). This means Chilean nationals can transit through US airports without a US B visa — making routings like Santiago–Miami–London straightforward. Combined with Chile’s UK ETA eligibility, Chilean passport holders have unusually frictionless access to multiple travel corridors. For the UK leg, the ETA is still required regardless of US ESTA status — the two systems are entirely independent.
Santiago Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (SCL) connects to London via Madrid (Iberia, LATAM — under 13 hours to Madrid then 2.5 to London), Amsterdam (KLM), Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Paris (Air France) and São Paulo (LATAM connecting to European carriers). Via Miami, Chile’s ESTA eligibility simplifies US transit for UK-bound travellers. Total journey time Santiago–London is typically 17–22 hours. The Línea 6 Metro connects Santiago’s city centre to the airport in approximately 30 minutes.
6. Belgium — UK ETA Guide
Belgium (Belgique / België / Belgien) — ETA at a Glance
- Population: ~12 million (trilingual: Dutch/French/German)
- ETA eligible since: 2 April 2025 (EU expansion)
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
- Passport required: Belgian biometric passport. Belgian ID card (eID) is NOT accepted for UK entry.
- Key routes: Brussels Zaventem (BRU) – London Heathrow, Gatwick, City — Brussels Airlines, British Airways, easyJet; Eurostar Brussels-Midi – London St Pancras (direct, ~2hrs — ETA required before boarding at Brussels)
- Dedicated guide: UK ETA for Dutch, Belgian, Austrian & Swiss Citizens
- EU institutions note: Brussels is the de facto capital of the EU — a large community of EU officials, diplomats and international civil servants travel frequently between Brussels and London for institutional purposes
Belgium: Eurostar, EU Institutions and the Belgian-UK Corridor
Belgium occupies a unique position as host of the EU’s primary institutions — the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council are all based in Brussels. This creates a distinctive travel pattern: a constant flow of Belgian and other EU nationals in institutional roles travelling between Brussels and London for political, regulatory and diplomatic meetings. Post-Brexit, this Brussels-London institutional travel has not diminished — if anything, the UK’s departure from the EU has increased the volume of bilateral meetings required to manage the relationship. Belgian nationals — and EU officials of all nationalities — travelling on this corridor need a valid ETA before boarding Eurostar at Brussels-Midi.
Belgium’s Three Communities: Three Travel Markets
Belgium’s linguistic and cultural division — Flemish (Dutch-speaking) Flanders in the north, Wallonia (French-speaking) in the south, and the German-speaking Community in the east — creates three distinct travel markets with different profiles. Flemish Belgian visitors to the UK tend toward cultural tourism (London’s museums, theatre, Scottish highlands). Walloon Belgian visitors often combine UK trips with French-language cultural attractions. German-speaking Belgian nationals may also hold German passports. All travel on Belgian passports for UK ETA purposes — the linguistic community is irrelevant to ETA eligibility.
Brussels Zaventem Airport (BRU) serves London Heathrow (Brussels Airlines, British Airways), Gatwick (easyJet) and London City (Brussels Airlines). The Eurostar Brussels-Midi to London St Pancras runs approximately 10 times daily — 1 hour 51 minutes — making it one of the fastest international rail connections in Europe. ETA check occurs at Brussels-Midi before boarding. Antwerp, Ghent and Liège are all within easy reach of Brussels for the Eurostar. Charleroi Airport (CRL) serves Stansted via Ryanair.
7. Austria & Switzerland — ETA Guide
Austria and Switzerland are covered in full detail — alongside Belgium and the Netherlands — in our dedicated page: UK ETA for Austrian, Swiss, Belgian & Dutch Citizens. The following provides a summary with key specifics for each country.
Austria (Österreich) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~9 million. ETA eligible since 2 April 2025 (EU expansion). Austrian passport (Reisepass) required — Austrian Personalausweis not accepted for UK entry. Vienna Schwechat Airport (VIE) serves London Heathrow (Austrian Airlines, British Airways), Gatwick (easyJet) and Stansted (Ryanair). Flight time approximately 2.5 hours. Austria’s UK travel profile is diverse: strong cultural tourism (Vienna Philharmonic at the Proms, Mozart connections), business travel (Austria’s banking sector has London connections), and the substantial Austrian community in the UK, particularly in London. Salzburg (SZG) and Graz (GRZ) have seasonal UK connections. Austria joined the ETA scheme as an EU member — the same rules apply as all other EU states.
Switzerland (Schweiz / Suisse / Svizzera) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (~25 CHF)
Population ~8.7 million. Switzerland is not an EU member but was included in the April 2025 ETA expansion through its bilateral agreements with the EU and specific UK-Swiss arrangements. Swiss passport (Reisepass/Passeport) required — Swiss identity card not accepted for UK entry. Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland’s main hub — multiple daily Heathrow services (Swiss International, British Airways, Edelweiss) and Gatwick/City connections. Geneva (GVA) serves Heathrow (SWISS, British Airways) and City. Basel/Mulhouse (BSL/MLH) serves Stansted. Flight time Zurich–London approximately 2 hours. Switzerland’s UK relationship is shaped by financial services (Swiss banks — UBS, Credit Suisse/UBS — have major London presences), pharmaceuticals (Novartis, Roche, Nestlé have UK operations), and a significant Swiss expatriate community in London.
8. Costa Rica & Panama — ETA Guide
Costa Rica — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately 10,400 CRC)
Population ~5.2 million. Costa Rica is Central America’s most visited country — an eco-tourism powerhouse famous for its biodiversity, stable democracy and high living standards relative to its region. The UK-Costa Rica relationship is primarily tourism and business: British eco-tourists visit Costa Rica in significant numbers (creating a reverse flow of Costa Rican travel industry professionals visiting UK travel trade events), and Costa Rica’s developing technology sector has created some UK-Costa Rica business travel. Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José connects to London via Miami (American, British Airways), Houston (United), Madrid (Iberia) or New York (Delta). Costa Rica is also ESTA-eligible in the US, simplifying the US transit option for UK-bound travellers.
Panama — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately $20 USD — Panama uses USD)
Population ~4.4 million. Panama is Central America’s financial hub — home to the Panama Canal, a major international banking and financial services centre, and one of the region’s most globally connected economies. Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City is Latin America’s largest hub airport — Copa Airlines’ hub connecting dozens of Latin American cities, with Copa operating London connections via its European partners. The UK-Panama relationship is rooted in the Panama Canal (British engineering contributed significantly to its construction), financial services, and maritime law (Panama is the world’s largest ship registry, with strong connections to London’s maritime insurance market at Lloyd’s). UK travel purposes include financial sector meetings, legal services, and tourism.
9. Slovakia & Slovenia — ETA Guide
Slovakia (Slovensko) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~5.5 million. Slovakia — the eastern half of the former Czechoslovakia, independent since the 1993 Velvet Divorce — is among Central Europe’s most dynamic manufacturing economies, hosting Volkswagen, Kia, Stellantis and Jaguar Land Rover assembly plants. The UK-Slovakia relationship is shaped by this automotive connection and by a significant Slovak diaspora in the UK — estimated at 80,000–120,000, particularly concentrated in London and in agricultural areas across England. Bratislava Airport (BTS) serves London Stansted (Ryanair) and Luton (Wizz Air). Vienna Airport (VIE), just 60 km from Bratislava, is commonly used by Slovaks for fuller UK route options. Slovak ID cards (občianský preukaz) are NOT accepted for UK entry — a biometric Slovak passport (cestovný pas) is required.
Slovenia (Slovenija) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~2.1 million. Slovenia — the most northwesterly of the former Yugoslav republics, EU and Schengen member since 2004 — is one of Central Europe’s most prosperous smaller economies. Its UK connection is primarily through tourism (Slovenia sends architects, designers and professionals to UK industry events) and a small diaspora. Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) serves London Stansted (Ryanair) and Gatwick (easyJet seasonally). Venice Marco Polo, Trieste and Zagreb airports are also accessible for Slovenians seeking additional UK route options. Slovenian ID cards (osebna izkaznica) are NOT accepted for UK entry — a biometric passport (potni list) is required. Slovenia is notable as one of Europe’s most scenic countries — its UK-based diaspora often travels home for summer holidays to Lake Bled and the Julian Alps, returning on the ETA.
10. Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania — ETA Guide
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania share a distinctive relationship with the United Kingdom — shaped by the post-2004 EU accession migration wave that brought significant Baltic communities to British cities, the UK’s strong commitment to Baltic security (British troops rotate through Estonia as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence), and Estonia’s remarkable status as the world’s most digitally advanced government. The three Baltic diaspora communities in the UK — estimated at 120,000 Lithuanians, 60,000 Latvians and 15,000 Estonians — generate significant family visit travel that is among the most practically important ETA use cases for these nations.
Estonia (Eesti) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~1.4 million. Estonia is the world’s most digitally advanced government — the country where you can vote, pay taxes, start a company and access medical records online — and a member of NATO and the EU since 2004. A British Army battle group rotates through Estonia as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP), creating military personnel travel. Tallinn Airport (TLL) serves London Stansted (Ryanair), Gatwick (easyJet, airBaltic) and Heathrow (airBaltic connecting via Riga). Tallinn’s medieval Old Town is a major heritage tourism draw for UK visitors. Estonian ID cards are NOT accepted for UK entry — biometric passport required. Estonia’s e-Residency programme has attracted UK-based digital entrepreneurs to establish EU companies through Estonia, creating a distinct professional travel relationship.
Latvia (Latvija) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~1.8 million. Latvia joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and has one of the largest diaspora communities relative to its population of any EU member — an estimated 300,000 Latvians live abroad, including approximately 60,000 in the UK (primarily in London, Birmingham and the East Midlands). This diaspora makes family visit travel the dominant UK-bound purpose for Latvian nationals. Riga International Airport (RIX) is the largest airport in the Baltics — airBaltic’s hub with direct services to London Gatwick and Stansted. airBaltic also connects Riga to other UK airports. Latvian ID cards are NOT accepted for UK entry. Latvian nationals in the UK with Settled Status still need an ETA on their Latvian passport for every return from Latvia.
Lithuania (Lietuva) — Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
Population ~2.8 million. Lithuania has the largest diaspora of the three Baltic states — an estimated 120,000–150,000 Lithuanians live in the UK, primarily in London, Edinburgh and the east of England. Post-2004 EU accession migration brought Lithuanian workers particularly into agriculture, food processing, construction and hospitality. Family visit travel between Lithuania and the UK is extraordinarily dense for a country of 2.8 million — Wizz Air and Ryanair operate multiple daily Vilnius–London and Kaunas–London services specifically because of diaspora demand. Vilnius Airport (VNO) serves London Luton (Wizz Air), Stansted (Ryanair) and Gatwick. Kaunas Airport (KUN) also serves London. Lithuanian ID cards (asmens tapatybės kortelė) are NOT accepted for UK entry — biometric passport (pasas) required.
11. Luxembourg — ETA Guide
Luxembourg (Lëtzebuerg / Luxembourg / Luxemburg) — ETA at a Glance
- Population: ~680,000 (smallest EU founding member by population)
- ETA eligible since: 2 April 2025 (EU expansion)
- Government fee: £20 plus our handling fee (approximately €23)
- Passport required: Luxembourgish biometric passport. Luxembourg ID card (Carte d’identité luxembourgeoise) is NOT accepted for UK entry.
- Key routes: Luxembourg Findel Airport (LUX) – London Heathrow (Luxair, British Airways), Gatwick (easyJet), City (Luxair). Flight time approximately 1.5 hours.
- Official languages: Luxembourgish, French, German — three official languages for a population of 680,000
- Expatriate nation: Luxembourg’s resident population is ~47% foreign nationals — the highest proportion in the EU. Many Luxembourg residents hold other EU nationalities and may travel to the UK on those passports.
- Financial centre: Luxembourg is the EU’s primary investment fund domicile — the UK-Luxembourg financial relationship (investment funds, private equity, bank regulation) is one of the most intense bilateral financial sector connections in Europe
Luxembourg: Europe’s Financial Capital and Its UK Connection
Luxembourg is simultaneously one of the world’s smallest nations by population and one of its most economically significant. As the EU’s primary investment fund domicile — home to more AUM (assets under management) than any other EU jurisdiction — Luxembourg maintains an exceptionally intensive financial relationship with London’s City. Fund managers, private equity professionals, regulatory lawyers and compliance officers travel between Luxembourg and London on a weekly or fortnightly basis. The ETA’s 2-year, unlimited-entry validity is ideally suited to this pattern — one application covers two years of repeated short business visits.
12. National ID Cards: Not Valid for UK Entry
Every EU member state covered in this guide — Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg — issued identity cards that previously allowed entry to the UK under EU free movement. None of these ID cards are accepted for UK entry today. Switzerland, though not an EU member, also has an identity card that is not accepted.
| Country | ID card name | UK valid? | Need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Personalausweis | No | German Reisepass + ETA |
| France | Carte Nationale d’Identité | No | French passeport + ETA |
| Netherlands | Identiteitskaart | No | Dutch paspoort + ETA |
| Belgium | eID (Identiteitskaart/CNI) | No | Belgian paspoort/passeport + ETA |
| Austria | Personalausweis | No | Austrian Reisepass + ETA |
| Switzerland | Identitätskarte/Carte d’identité | No | Swiss Reisepass/passeport + ETA |
| Slovakia | Občianský preukaz | No | Slovak cestovný pas + ETA |
| Slovenia | Osebna izkaznica | No | Slovenian potni list + ETA |
| Estonia | Isikutunnistus | No | Estonian pass + ETA |
| Latvia | Personas apliecība | No | Latvian pase + ETA |
| Lithuania | Asmens tapatybės kortelė | No | Lithuanian pasas + ETA |
| Luxembourg | Carte d’identité | No | Luxembourg passeport + ETA |
13. Diaspora and Settled Status Holders
The Baltic states, Slovakia, Slovenia, France, Germany and the Netherlands all have significant communities of nationals resident in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme. The critical rule — identical to all other EU diaspora communities — is that EU Settled Status does not replace the ETA requirement.
If you are a Lithuanian, Latvian, Slovak or French national living in the UK with Settled Status or Pre-Settled Status and you travel back to your home country, you need a valid UK ETA on your home-country passport before boarding any flight or train back to the UK. Your Settled Status is checked at the UK border; the ETA is checked at the departure airport. These are two separate, independently required permissions. Without a valid ETA on your Lithuanian, Latvian, Slovak, French or other EU passport, you will be denied boarding — regardless of your Settled Status. Apply for your ETA and keep it current at all times. Check your status before every trip using our instant status lookup tool.

| 7 | Check status | Our instant status lookup confirms your ETA is active before every trip. |
| 8 | Travel | Present the same passport at check-in, Eurostar boarding or ferry check-in. ETA verified electronically — nothing to print. |
For French, Belgian and Dutch nationals using Eurostar — and for any traveller boarding Eurostar in Paris, Lille, Brussels or Amsterdam — the ETA check occurs at the departure station in continental Europe, not at St Pancras in London. Your ETA must be confirmed before you arrive at the Eurostar departure lounge. The juxtaposed border controls mean UK immigration is processed on the European side before departure. This is a unique and important practical point for frequent Eurostar travellers who may assume the check happens on arrival in London.
15. Frequently Asked Questions
Do German, French, Dutch, Belgian, Austrian and Swiss nationals all need a UK ETA?
Yes. All became ETA-eligible on 2 April 2025 as part of the EU expansion. The ETA has been mandatory at boarding — and at Eurostar departure — since 25 February 2026. Every national from these countries needs a valid ETA before travelling to the UK, regardless of how frequently they travel or their purpose of visit.
Can I travel to the UK on my German Personalausweis or French Carte d’Identité?
No. National identity cards from all EU member states — including Germany’s Personalausweis and France’s Carte Nationale d’Identité — are not accepted for UK entry. A valid biometric passport is required. The ETA is linked to your passport number and cannot be applied to an ID card. See our German citizens guide and French citizens guide for full details.
I take the Eurostar from Paris to London. Do I need an ETA?
Yes — and importantly, the ETA is checked at Paris Gare du Nord before you board, not at London St Pancras on arrival. UK immigration is processed at the departure station. Your ETA must be valid and confirmed before you arrive at the Eurostar departure lounge in Paris, Lille or Brussels.
I’m Lithuanian living in the UK with Settled Status. Do I need an ETA when I return from Lithuania?
Yes. EU Settled Status does not replace the ETA requirement. If you travel on your Lithuanian passport, you need a valid ETA before boarding any flight back to the UK. Your Settled Status is checked by UK Border Force at Stansted or Gatwick; the ETA is checked by the airline in Vilnius or Kaunas. Both apply independently. Is Chile ESTA-eligible for US transit when travelling to the UK?
Yes. Chile is one of the few Latin American nations eligible for the US ESTA, which simplifies US transit for UK-bound trips via Miami or other US hubs. However, Chile’s ESTA eligibility and the UK ETA are completely separate — you still need a UK ETA for the UK leg of your journey regardless of your US ESTA status.
I travel the Hook of Holland–Harwich ferry from the Netherlands. Do I need a UK ETA?
Yes. The ETA requirement applies to all entry routes to the UK including ferry crossings. Stena Line checks travel documents at check-in in Hook of Holland. Your ETA must be active and linked to your passport before you board the ferry in the Netherlands.
How much does the UK ETA cost for German or French nationals?
The UK government fee is £20 plus our handling fee — approximately €23 at current rates. The ETA is valid for 2 years with unlimited UK entries. Every traveller including children needs a separate ETA. See our full pricing page.
Do children from any of these countries need their own ETA?
Yes. Every traveller regardless of age needs their own ETA linked to their own passport. Children cannot travel under a parent’s ETA. See our families guide and minors guide.
I renewed my passport. Do I need a new ETA?
Yes. Your ETA is linked to your specific passport number. A new passport requires a new ETA, even if the previous ETA is still within its 2-year validity. Use our instant status lookup to verify which passport your current ETA is linked to.
