1. Who This Guide Is For — Eligible Spanish-Speaking Nationalities

Not every Spanish-speaking country is eligible for the UK ETA, and not every Spanish speaker travels on a Spanish-speaking country’s passport — millions of US citizens who speak Spanish at home travel on a US passport. This guide covers every scenario:

2. Spain 🇪🇸 — Country-Specific UK ETA Guide

Spain is the largest Spanish-speaking source of UK ETA applications by a wide margin, and one of the UK’s closest European neighbours in terms of travel volume. Roughly 650,000 Spanish visits to the UK are recorded annually, and an estimated 160,000–180,000 Spanish nationals live in the UK.

The DNI Problem

This is the single most important thing for Spanish travellers to understand: the Spanish DNI (Documento Nacional de Identidad) is not accepted for UK entry. Before Brexit, Spanish citizens could enter the UK with just their DNI. Since October 2021, a valid biometric passport is mandatory — and since April 2025, a passport alone is not enough either. You need both a passport and an approved UK ETA.

Routes and Airports

Madrid Barajas (MAD) and Barcelona El Prat (BCN) both operate multiple daily direct flights to London Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted via Iberia, British Airways, Vueling, and easyJet. Regional airports — Málaga, Valencia, Bilbao, Seville, and Palma de Mallorca — all connect to UK airports, mostly serving leisure travel. Flight time from Madrid or Barcelona to London is roughly 2 hours.

Gibraltar: A Special Case

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory bordering Spain. Gibraltarians hold British passports and are ETA-exempt. Spanish nationals crossing into Gibraltar for work do not need an ETA for Gibraltar itself, but do need a UK ETA if they subsequently fly or sail from Gibraltar to mainland Great Britain.

3. Argentina 🇦🇷 — Country-Specific UK ETA Guide

Argentina has one of the deepest historical relationships with Britain of any Spanish-speaking nation — 19th-century British investment built Argentina’s railway network, and today an estimated 100,000+ UK nationals of Argentine heritage or dual Anglo-Argentine citizens live between both countries.

The Anglo-Argentine Dual National Rule

Many Anglo-Argentines hold both an Argentine and a British passport. If you have a valid British passport, you must travel to the UK on it — British citizens are fully exempt from the ETA. Currency Note

The Argentine peso (ARS) has seen extraordinary volatility. UK ETA payment is charged in GBP via Stripe at the exchange rate applicable at checkout — the ARS equivalent will fluctuate. This is normal and does not affect your application.

Routes

British Airways operates a direct Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to London Heathrow service — one of the longest non-stop commercial routes in the world at roughly 14 hours. Connections via Madrid (Iberia), Paris (Air France), and Frankfurt (Lufthansa) are also widely used.

4. United States 🇺🇸 — For Hispanic and Latino Travellers

The United States has the largest Spanish-speaking population outside Latin America and Spain — over 40 million people speak Spanish at home in the US. Every US citizen, regardless of home language or heritage, travels on a US passport and is subject to the same UK ETA requirement: mandatory since 8 January 2025.

5. Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, Guatemala — Quick Reference

6. The National ID Card Trap — Applies to Every Nationality Here

Every eligible nationality in this guide has a national ID card that is not valid for UK entry. This is the single most common and most avoidable reason Spanish-speaking travellers are denied boarding.

A valid biometric passport is mandatory for every nationality above, in addition to an approved UK ETA. There are no exceptions.

7. The UK ETA Application, Explained Once

This is deliberate — the Home Office runs a single digital system for all eligible nationalities, so understanding the process once means you understand it for every trip, every family member, and every renewal.

8. What the UK ETA Application Form Asks

The form has three parts. Preparing these in advance is the single biggest factor in getting a fast approval.

1. Personal and passport details: full legal name exactly as printed on the machine-readable zone (MRZ) of your passport, nationality, date of birth, passport number, and expiry date.
2. Photos: a selfie against a plain light background, and a photo of your passport’s biographic data page.
3. Eligibility questions: 8 yes/no questions covering criminal convictions, prior immigration issues, and certain health matters. Almost every applicant answers No to all of them.
